But I am strongly opposed to the restriction. The reason is that when regulatory bodies take on a paternal approach as to when a good or service may not be available, it sets a precedent. Temporal restrictions, zonal restrictions (on not only booze) and so it goes. These things hurt vendors, affect consumers and handicap the economy.

Here in Pattaya people openly drinking and being served beers and cocktails in all outdoor bars/restaurants every day between 2-5pm. 

Right next to police station on Soi 9 and Beach road.  On Soi Buakhao, etc... everywhere in Pattaya

Can drink your self unconscious in the bar at any time of time of day...just can't buy booze from the grocery stores/7-11, etc.

No, small independent stores can choose to disobey the laws, but they will face the consequences if they get caught , like being fined or closed down

Maybe the law was instigated in the first place because the politicians were coming back late and drunk after lunch and they just imposed it on everyone.

There was a provision to allow bars/restaurants to buy alcohol 'for stock' during this time.
The phrase used was 'wholesale amount'.
I remember that people were allowed to buy one case or more of beer during this time, but not a couple of bottles.
Does anyone else remember that?

Yes I remember buying booze out of hours in Tesco or Big C, they stipulated that you had to buy a minimum of 10 litres of any booze of your choice. Didn't it change shortly after the change of government.

Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end.

I was talking about wine (decent wine) and hard liquors (not just Sangsom and Hong Thong) as I stated.  Yes, you can get the cheap Thai swill beer any time of the day / night.  Try getting a good Craft Beer during the non-alcohol hours ... you can't.

Probably because "inconvenient" is "irritating", clearly not the end of the world, just irritating. As someone mentioned it above, when you do your shopping and arrive in front of the booze to then realise it is actually 3pm and again, you "forgot about that", it is just irritating, nothing more. But the most irritating to me, I am not sure this law is serving any purpose since as others mentioned it too, you can buy some at any local around the corner and that is where all real alcohoolics go to.

No need to get  your panties in a bunch, I was just sharing my personal experience. While you may be right about craft beers, I still managed to find a cosy lil liqour shop not far from the moat that had proper spirits (not Saeng Som or Hong Thong but stuff like  JW, Absolut and even a small selection of wines). If you know where to look you can definitely still shop for decent booze in the afternoon.
