What to do after quitting job?

So my missus (obviously not Thai) quit her job recently and she has now 1 month before the former employer cancels her work permit (former employer agreed to this).

What can we do now to continue legally in Thailand without actually leaving the country?

I, myself am on a Non-O Volunteer visa obtained through an agent last year, but I've been told by several agents volunteer visas are no longer possible.

Any ideas or recommendations?

Cheers,

1. Finding a new job, getting a new work permit?

2. Hope, that neither he Labor office nor someone else tells the immigration?

(I once canceled a job impulsively, include the wp from one day to the other, myself. No one did care about, that I was still on non-B for about 8 month)

3. Covid visas?

3. Covid visas?

1. Not in need nor looking for another job.

2. It's risky (and former employer confirmed his visa will be canceled next month by them).

3. Yeah temporarily it's what we are going to be doing.

Temporarily you can only apply for 60 day Covid extensions.

Longer term would depend on ages and financial situation.

Financial situation is perfectly fine - hence why she quit her job and not looking for a new one.

Age wise at 30 years of age she is far away from retirement visa. And I'm even farther away, lol.

Yes we will go for COVID visas temporarily, but we need a better longer term solution.

Thailand Elite is not an option either, because while it is the cheapest, we don't plan to stay here for 5 years atm.

Any further ideas?

@Faz or anybody else in the know > Are Non-O Volunteer Visa not available anymore?  I know the only way to get hold of them is through an agent.  Is there any reason e.g. an Immigration policy change that they are not available anymore?

I contacted the agent that got my 12 months Non-O Volunteer Visa in May of last year, and she said they (volunteer visas) have been temporarily suspended and nobody knows when they will be available again. That's all I know.

Maybe she lied?

Aren’t ED visas also unavailable presently . How about an O Retirement Visa ( under 50). Should get all the options from a good agent (where no financials needed).

Is that a thing? We’ve been told you need to be over 50 to apply, and we actually are in our 20s…

Financials wouldn’t be an issue, having the 800K in a bank or whatever, we both have had more than that in each of our accounts for more than a year. But question is, can she apply retirement visa?

Education VISA to learn Thai for one year?

I suspect his wife is on a Non B Visa.
The OP is on a 12 month extension of a Non O volunteer.
There is no procedure to change to a Non ED Visa.
They'd have to exit the Country and re-enter either with an ED Visa from a Thai Embassy, or VE or TV and change status to Non ED. https://bangkok.immigration.go.th/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/03.pdf

Most colleges, universities are doing online learning, very very doubtful they'd get an ED Visa.

Being under 50 years of age options are limited for long term stay, the Elite Visa may be your only option.

It's an extension of stay based on retirement, a permit, not a Visa.
Must be 50 years of age.

I thought as much.

i guess we will try COVID extensions for now and see how it goes. Elite Visa is definitely the best choice, it’s just that we are not planning to stay for 5 years. It will be a matter of months or 1 year at most.

Currently the cut of date for 60 day Covid extension applications is Jan 25th, but that will almost certainly be extended again to March 25th, meaning you could stay until May at minimum.

Usually I'd suggest the METV from a Thai Embassy, which would permit you to stay for almost 9 months, however that has been temporarily suspended as land border are closed. The STV is it's temporary replacement. This permit you a stay of 90 days on entry, and that stay can be extended a further two 90 day extensions at local Immigration offices, totalling a stay of almost 9 months.

Hi @Faz

I am not 100% sure but I thought you could apply for the METV from any Thai Embassy, meaning that you could on expiry of your Visa Exempt entry do a border-run to a neighboring country Thai Embassy/Consulate and apply there for the METV.  You can do that for a singular entry Tourist Visa, so I presume it would also be possible to do that for an METV.

But the STV is a different kettle of fish, as the requirements are much more restrictive than for the METV which it temporarily replaces, and afaik you can ONLY apply for the STV in your home-country (or country of permanent residence).

Can you clarify/comment on the above?  Thanks!

I'd agree with your assessment @BlueSphinx.

As always it's for the individual concerned to check the availability of Visa choices and requirements to apply at any particular Thai Embassy / Consulate, of which not all are offering the STV.
