Hotel frauds in Bangkok

I was barely trapped.

Berkeley hotel Pratunam

I bought the airplane tickets to Bangkok and paid for them. There was not a single
sentence in the tourist information that the PCR and limousine service must be
included. I wrote to the hotel and wanted clarity. after repeated requests, I was
asked to take a picture of both sides of my credit card and send them a photo of
my passport, and was offered the opportunity to purchase an additional package.

the extra package was not sold to me. after receiving the credit card details I
was no longer taken and I stopped this joke. It was understandably a scam.
I bought my hotel elsewhere and got all the paperwork done in an hour.

if you are a tourist, be please careful and for sure avoid The Berkeley hotel
Pratunam and you will enjoy peaceful mind

This is my first trip to Thailand and I thought Thailand was a tourism-friendly
and safe country. So, by my first impression I think I should be all my vacation
really careful.

I hope I do not regret my decision.

Sounds like you already regret it. It’s always best to confirm all details first to avoid surprises here in Thailand. Sorry that happened to you.

You will certainly regret it if you make mistakes like photo'ing your credit card, front and back and sending that to an person that you have no knowledge of, plus your passport.  You need to wise up a bit I'm afraid,  or you will get royally ripped off here.

Why would you choose to go to Thailand right now for the first time? I assume you are a regular reader of this site since you posted in Thaiger Talk. There has been an abundance of information posted on how to go about making hotel arrangements to ensure requirements are met. Most people are using Agoda with no issues. The fact that you would send the front and back of your credit card with your passport is mind boggling. You are destined to be ripped off. You should now call your credit card company and have them issue you a new number. I bet you won't though! You'll probably decide to just monitor it for any suspicious transactions.  Sure...you can do that, but any fraud will use your credit availability until it is investigated. And if you provided a photo id....you may lose that fraud claim. I work for a bank and deal with credit card fraud all the time. Good luck.

Now is a bad time to travel to Thailand period. I live here and have booked a hotel domestically only to find the place shut on arrival. I had back up and was transferred for free and upgraded to a much nicer one but since then I have called the hotel first to avoid issues.

Check all aspects before arrival and as other members of the forum correctly stated don't provide copies of personal data such as passport and credit card. Lots of identity theft happening. Thailand is no exception.

Sorry about what happened. Pre covid19 these issues were not that prevalent.  Thailand is very tourist friendly but regulations are constantly changing, have a back up plan to be safe and check refund policies.

at least you got to experience this at the very beginning and learned from it. this is what most tourist experience over the course of their trip. You will be scammed every chance you get.

https://travelscams.org/asia/thailand/

also you are now open to legal action for naming the hotel in open internet media. an American last year was arrested for leaving a bad review of a resort he was staying at.

good luck with your trip and remember no matter what they tell you the grand palace is not closed today.

Well , the American guy didn't leave a bad review .

He conducted a long campaign of writing false and fake reviews of the hotel that he stayed at using different names to post the reviews online , he continued even after the hotel asked him to stop , when he continued , the hotel took legal action to make him stop .

And all because the American was upset about being asked to pay corkage to bring alcohol to drink on the premises , (which he didnt even pay anyway)

sounds like a Thai girl I know.

you better watch that CC for any unauthorized charges.

the police  most likely own the hotel. you see where this is going?

as a tourist you cannot trust anyone here. don't leave your passport as collateral for a scooter rental. the list is endless.

i assume you are familiar with Thailand's draconian drug laws? Carrying Viagra without a prescription is illegal.

Now I'm in Thailand.

Well, it seems, that this Berekley hotel is hotel and for them it's ok to collect credit card data.

I did not choose them, but I moved my booking to the end of my vacation and I'am going to visit them. I know how to scam them back.

Thailand seems nice and after quarantine hotel will go now to Pattaya. Thank for replying

That is not a Thailand scam, it can happen in any country unless you are alert! :)

I must be missing something? The PCR test and "limo" are required to your Sha extra + hotel.

The extra package sounded legit - if they're not included it's an extra charge.

Now if a tuk tuk driver says "your Sha extra plus hotel is closed today. I can take you to another one that is open, just as good.."

It might be your last visit to Thailand if you carry on naming and shaming hotels

The comments were untrue slanderous allegations , I think you will find that's illegal in many Countries
