Thaiger Posted November 11, 2021 #103477 Share Posted November 11, 2021 The Thai government has set aside up to half a million Covid-19 vaccine doses as it prepares for the return of much-needed migrant workers. The move comes following confirmation from Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin that Thailand will sign MoUs with neighbouring countries to allow workers to enter through legal channels. Officials have vowed to crack down on people smugglers and illegal job brokers in a bid to reduce the number of migrants crossing into the kingdom illegally. The Bangkok Post reports that businesses in Thailand are experiencing problems with labour shortages, particularly in construction, food, and rubber manufacturing. Cabra Posted November 11, 2021 #103552 Share Posted November 11, 2021 This is probably one of the more intelligent decisions Thailand has made with respect to ensuring a safer reopening of the economy...of course the devil is in the implementation details...which seems to always trip up the best intentions. Hopefully, the foreign works will be given access without too much grief.
Bob20 Posted November 11, 2021 #103574 Share Posted November 11, 2021 Unless they are vaccinated with the Johnson vaccine, they will not be "vaccinated" in their 14 day quarantine, but will receive their first dose, and won't be protected yet. If the first jab is Sinovac, that won't protect them at all until they receive a mix and match second jab weeks or months later. And even if it's not Sinovac, it still won't protect them to its full potential after only one jab. Meanwhile, as we have seen everywhere around the country, these major people movements spread the virus so caution should be taken, not only by vaccination but regular random checks to actively find problems before they get out of hand. palooka Posted November 11, 2021 #103594 Share Posted November 11, 2021 Don't have to worry about the Cambodians, Hun Sen has vaccinated 90% already and still going. Chinese vax but heck it beats starving. Maybe the Govt should be forcing the employers to take and pay Thais to a ratio of 51% to 49%. Do it easy enough with condo residency.

Makes sense to me....In a different thread I have asked how little these employers pay (including medical, meals and accomodations) that Thais were not interested in the work. (never got a response...maybe its a secret).

Changnam43 Posted November 11, 2021 #103747 Share Posted November 11, 2021 (edited) My wife employs almost exclusively migrant workers in her business. Recently worker shortages have been pushing wages up. Her view is that the government should make it very simple for migrant workers to come in provided they are tested and vaccinated either before or on entry. Her reasoning being, apart from self interest, that they are going to come one way or another and it is way better to have them enter legally with sensible controls in place.
