First class Insurance query

After buying a car with current First class insurance you drive off and on the way home you get T boned and the car is a writeoff.

Can you claim on that insurance?

That first class insurance is in the previous owners name, who gets the insurance payout?

Are you even insured if the policy was sold for specified drivers?

Anyone have any experience and can clarify a bit more in this area?

It matters not who's name the Insurance policy was in, it's whether it was a named driver or any driver that was covered. You don't have a copy of the policy?

The policy holder gets the Insurance pay-out.

Probably worth adding that in Thailand it is the car that gets insured (and any diver with a licence/named driver depending on the policy wording is covered) unlike in the UK, for example, where the individual is covered.

It's an strange system but as long as your name is in the green book you're covered. I think it's odd  my girlfriend who only past her test 2 months ago can in theory drive my car and the insurance cover is the same as it' is for me with years of experience, still much cheaper than in the UK so I'm all in favour .

I've always insured vehicles and motorcycles with A1 Insurance over the years.

In each case the policies provided cover for any driver and had a fixed excess.
You could always voluntary increase the excess amount and request a named driver, or drivers to reduce the policy cost.

The owner should have given you the Insurance policy when you purchased the car and with a simple phone call you could have changed the policy holders name before driving the car away.

If you can prove you just purchased the car to the Insurers, then they may deal with you over any claim.

It's the vehicle that's covered in Thailand.

You can have 40 years driving experience and full no claims discount on your current vehicle, but buy a new vehicle and you start from scratch again.
Purchase a second hand vehicle and you'll get discounted Insurance, provided it previously had A1 insurance cover.

yep and maybe there in lies some of the road safety issues we see and experience out here. Large vehicles on fast roads with inexperienced drivers. Covering a vehicle doesn't take into account the drivers abilities to actually drive it.
