Recommended Posts

With soaring Covid-19 infections, Ho Chi Minh City has issued a stay-at-home order enacting a strict lockdown that bans people from leaving their home starting Monday. The megacity of 9 million people has accounted for a full 80% of all Covid-19 deaths and 50% of Covid-19 infections in Vietnam and less harsh lockdown restrictions aren’t making headway. The deputy head of Ho Chi Minh City’s Coronavirus authority asked everyone to stay in their homes and not to go outside, in order to stop the spread of Covid-19 in its tracks and allow the city to treat the current critically ill […]

Yet another country who thought the answer was to lock the virus out until it has been eradicated. Slowly but surely they all have fallen prey. The only place holding out is New Zealand. How much longer can they carry on locking down rather than vaccinating and accepting it’s going to kill a number of people each year?

Good luck with enforcing that.  I hear that they are even worse than Thailand is terms of being 'leaky'.

The army is in there enforcing it.

Literally no-one to go out for a few weeks.  That will actually work - the infected will be over infections by then, although will be a few cases of "bring out your dead..."

The announcement as I received it on Friday -

5:30 PM, 8/20/2021]
"Urgent information from the Government Office (just finished meeting with the Ministry of Defense, will announce tomorrow):
 - HCM is in a state of emergency.
 - Supermarkets will be closed.  The big chain supermarket will sign a contract with the military to provide food for the people
 - 10k troops will join the Department of CT and a large supermarket system to distribute goods to households
 - Supermarkets and general warehouses operate closed with the army
 - People absolutely 0 go out
 Apply for 2 weeks
An announcement will be made as soon as possible when HCMC and District 7 are ready"

4 days ago, NZ went into regional lockdown after one case was found positive. 48 hours later, a further eleven cases so Nationwide lockdown. I think we will get to the point where there will be mass Covid/lockdown burnout. If Covid doesn't affect you physiologically it may well affect you psychologically.

NZ is an outlier, but their economy is on fire right now. Lockdowns, or any other public health measure for that matter, are designed to keep the hospital systems from being overwhelmed. This is the whole "flatten the curve" narrative that was lost in the clamor a year ago. People who abide by the basics: masks, social distancing, and (optionally) vaccines, make lockdowns unnecessary. But, people.

What makes you think they're "locking down rather than vaccinating" in NZ?

20% are fully vaccinated, down to 12 year olds, with Pfizer, and the roll out's going on steadily.

That's not "locking down rather than vaccinating".

Drive-in vax stations have long queues forming and can process ~2000 persons per day whilst remaining in their vehicle(s).

Developing your own vaccines in the middle of a pandemic that has taken hold on locally (7-8 months after vaccines became available) is not exactly timely not very effective. Should have forked out the money back in January.
