Northern Thailand is one of the best places for nature lovers as it features beautiful hills, rice fields, hill tribes, mountains and waterfalls. Visiting is definitely recommended during the months of December and January as the natural scenery gets even more beautiful as sakura and cherry blossoms adorn the outside world. Best months to visit are  November, December and into new year although by January many trees will be bare.  November is best IMO as being the end of monsoon season all vegetation is lush green and the air generally clear and temperatures cooler.

Towns like Pai are good as as stopover, accomodation and food, when exploring the countryside but may seem too touristy as an actual destination.  Many waterfalls, caves and forest areas may be explored in the region and there are some fabulous little cafes to be found in middle of nowhere.

Best place to visit, is around Mae Hong Son, spectacular scenery, lovely people, mainly hill tribe people.

Ban Rak Thai, north of MHS, tea village, fish caves, just north of MHS.

Go five  ks south of MHS, turn left, the old elephant trail to Chiang Mai, about 90 ks, quite a few hill tribe villages along the way.

We lived in Nong Kao Klang, 39 ks from MHS, 9 years ago, so different to the modern world, no phones, no electric, no night time light, go outside at midnight, peace and quiet, no noise/ light, just silence, fantastic.
