So who was paying them? Or were they just self appointed vigilantes?

"Contracted Guards" causes me to see this as a protection racket ala Sopranos and those 3 were foot soldiers.  The head kick to the unconscious Brit brings to mind the film Casino where Tommy shoots Spider without any hesitation and then blames the kid for his death.
