Recently, the northeastern Thai province Buri Ram had a gambling den busted. It reportedly used to be a pig stable, but forward thinking/criminal-minded residents had renovated it to allegedly serve as a gambling den. Police arrested 22 people. 53 year old “Chakrabongse” and 21 associates were arrested. Reportedly, they were sitting close together and no one was wearing a mask. Ah George Orwell didn't mention a gambling den in his book

Among 22 punters...so, yeah, the cops busted a "big" gambling den here.

Those operating a gambling den have to pay the police protection money. So the organizer collects 10% of all the money gambled every day to pay for venue and pay off the police. Then he has to make sure that the comings and goings of 30-40 people a day are not conspicuous to nosy neighbours which is not as easy as it sounds. The only ‘busts’ we hear about is where the organizers were foolish enough not to pay protection money. It’s becoming more difficult now with covid restrictions and even the police are passing up an opportunity in some areas to take protection money. But those that still do are coining it in and so are the organizers.
