Gold bar

I want to buy my partner a 1 Baht lump of gold for her birthday. I know the price is the same in most shops. Does it really matter where I buy it from?

Not really as the price is set Nationally. All you can do is choose a well-established shop and grab it at the best price when it drops as it has.

Unfortunately, it's still very high even with the recent drop but maybe now would be better than nearer New Year.

Nevertheless, it wouldn't hurt to buy from a reputable gold dealer. I know the reputable dealer(s) in MY neighborhood, and I buy from (and sell back to) the same one all the time. There is a very small spread between the buying and selling prices, and they always stand ready to buy (and sell) at the actual official prices. Here's the one I use:

https://www.huasengheng.com

They conveniently have a shop in a big mall near my home. I don't know where you live, so I can't recommend a specific shop to you. You'll need to find the reputable dealer(s) in your neighborhood. Maybe you can ask some of your Thai neighbors this question?

At this moment's price, one baht of gold would cost just under 32,000 baht. And by the way, one baht of gold is not a very big "lump".

I would say that it is essential to buy from a registered gold dealer, who is displaying the National Gold Price for that day and issues a receipt,  having weighed the gold in accordance with the legislation. Stay away from any other supposed gold outlets or you will surely get ripped off.

Some good advice in the above posts.

I would just like to add a word of caution. there are special deals on the www for buying gold. I've seen two this year. Buy a gold ring and get one free. That one from India. The other was half price gold in Kg bars. Shipped form West Africa I believe. In both cases there was no ConD option.

Get your gold from a reputable place; is my advice.

Where did you get the 'just under 32k'from please. I see over 35k for buying bars on the internet.

Sorry. My mistake. It's just under 34,000 now.  33,880 is the buying price for customers/the selling price for the gold shop. This applies to the 5 baht bars that I usually buy, and up. I think you have to add a few hundred baht to the price for a one baht bar. (I remember asking once because I thought it would cost the same price per baht unit of gold to buy the one baht bars as the five baht bars, but it wasn't the same. There was a slight premium over the depicted price for the one baht bars.)

Then Sir, you were ripped off.  The price of Gold is regulated per Bhat and is not different for !,2,3,5 or any other size. It only varies if you move to a design, such as a necklace, for which you pat extra.

Perhaps I was lied to, but I wasn't ripped off, as I didn't buy the one baht bar - because I was unwilling to pay more for it. I will go back and ask again how much the one baht bars cost.
