In the grand scheme of things, the use of rice whiskey, the lao Khao, which is fully legal, is far more of a problem than marijuana has been, is, or every will be.

Weed screws up your head too, needs to be moderated and controlled alongside other controlled products and substances.   Rather have it out in the open and controlled, not go back to being jail bait.

Obviously most kids/teens haven't developed the self-control skill set, hence the need to have controls in place, as imperfect as it may be, until such time they learn about themselves, the world around them, and can make informed decisions. 

Among those who protest against weed for one reason or another, I say to them be patient.  "Legal" weed in Thailand is just the latest fad after being illegal/taboo for so long.  This too shall pass and/or fade into the background, and then we'll move on to worrying about the next thing that comes along. 

Otherwise, it comes down to the individual's awareness of common pitfalls, recognizing if/when they are falling into one (or more) of them, and having self-control/discipline over THEMSELVES to course correct.   Same as many other things in life - spending/saving money, driving a car/motorbike, consuming (too much) food, creating a string of children and baby-mammas from one-night stands, etc.

Legislating the Majority into oblivion based on the ignorance and/or lack of personal control and responsibility by a minority, is how you become a nanny state, or worse, a police state.  Even worse is a police state cum religious caliphate, ruled over by one of the imaginary, bi-polar daddy dictators telling you what clothes to wear, what you can or can't do, say, think, eat, drink, smoke, on certain days of the week, or at all.  IMO, if you need that level of external supervision and structured control to lead a subjectively "good" life, as determined and mandated by others, then you have deeper issues you're not dealing with.  And that's fine, many people do, but leave me out of it, thank you very much.

What do you do if your cultural upbringing, family upbringing, and educationally you are unaware of the very existence of these potential deeper issues?  

In Thailand, for many, when all else confounds or confuses they go to the temple, same as generations before them.

Education, self-awareness, average intelligence abilities to combat the crap we get in our lives, etc has taken a massive leap forward for many western countries post WW2. Education.

Do a population education comparison of an average western country say from 1920 compared to 2020.

Then do same for Thailand.  Think there will be a massive difference. 

Do the same for Singapore for the less years (1970- 2020) and you may feel you got short changed if you are from a western country.

My comment took a turn into off-topic. :-/   The point I was making on religion was its invasive nature into politics and public policy; often perpetrated by those with higher education who know better, but pander to voters for personal gain/advancement.  Many drop the pretense once they get elected.  Some don't, and that's when religion can infect our discourse, and lead to legislation that impacts everyone. 

Agree about higher education.  

No issue with people who are the softer form of 'culturally religious' from their upbringing.  It's the ones who can't have a thought or form a sentence without mentioning it.   Even then it's not a problem, until it starts infecting public policy and legislation that impacts everyone
