Pretty cruel. How someone could do this is beyond me.

In fairness, when this happens the woman is usually suffering postpartum depression. Without an immediately supportive social network, women do abandon their newborn babies, sometimes.

Is postpartum and postnatal the same thing?
The difference, then, between the postpartum and the postnatal period is that 'postpartum' refers to the mother and 'postnatal' refers to the infant.

For some obscure reason a former wife, and registered nurse, had only ever used the the latter term for her own problems 🙄 later diagnosed as Chrohn's.

Unfotunately it turns up in the news more than I think everyone thinks happens. Just a shame for the little fella. At least he is still alive.

My nephew's fiance's sister just went through this

She was suicidal

Thankfully she had family to take care if the baby

But this was a well adjutsed(nurse also) eager waiting for the birth of her newborn and she just unraveled

And way back when it happened in your case, it would have been underdiagnosed
