I first visited Bangkok as a wide eyed young service kid in the late 1960s. I was mesmerized by its exotic vibrancy.  I actually preferred Singapore at that time , as it seemed to me to be a much wilder place, like a new frontier.  Now, I still prefer Singapore and I don't like Bangkok at all, but I can absolutely see its attraction to young back packers. A place to visit just the once I feel.

I was overwhelmed my 1st time, but have fond memories of that 1st visit

Now, maybe 100x visited, and I love it more every time!

Just a fantastic, vibrant city............

Thankfully my wife's village is only 1hr45mins

So in retirement I will spend many long weekends, 4-5 day stays down in BKK

My first visit to Bangkok was as a backpacker in 1993. I thought it was “dark and scary” but at the time, I was “young and stupid”. Sukhumvit Road seemed much wider in those days.

I first visited Thailand in 2007 with no plans other than to train Muay Thai for 3 months. On arrival my friend and I found some shit hole hotel on Sukhumvit and stayed there 3 nights before meeting some backpackers who told us about Khao San. So we moved to Khao San and stayed there for a week. I thought we were getting a real lesson on what Bangkok was like, but after visiting Thailand 7 more times with significantly more money and less stupidity, I've learned that I was being the very type of person (backpacker idiot) I now dislike. After that first trip I also thought I hated Bangkok, but now I love it. I love Chiang Mai and Ao Nang a lot MORE, but I do love Bangkok and look forward to kicking off and ending my visits there.

My 1st trip to Bangkok, well my 1st trip to Asia

I was supposed to go to Bangkok with a seasoned Thai traveler, booked everything/everywhere on his recommendations

Took Scuba lessons

And he cancelled a week before

I remember being sort of scared shitless at JFK airport

I landed around 8pm, was staying at Westin Sukhumvit

So it was dark on my drive to hotel, completely overwhelmed

I took a shower then I had to go and sit at the lobby bar for 4-5 drinks just to get my bearings before heading out onto Sukhumvit

It reminded me of the movie Lost in Translation.....
