Oh well, I do like De Santis but this persecution will rally the base and hand Trump the nomination by default.

The state prosecutor  is a man of unquestionable integrity and of impeccable credentials. He took over the case from the previous DA. Alvin Bragg  has not chased headlines and been very low key throught the process. His only agenda is to uphold the law. His office is one of the busiest in the state , and does not have "free time" to pursue cases without merit. The DA has faced some  disgusting personal attacks and maintained a quiet dignity throughout.  This is NOT a persecution. A grand jury saw enough evidence to support the return of an indictment. It will be up to the presidng court to decide on the merits of the evidence. Unfortunately, the information to date suggests that Mr. Trump broke multiple laws. The Trump organization was also guilty of tax fraud. It boggles the mind that "Republicans" would support a man who cheated on taxes and has been exposed as a serial liar.

Same biased  person with the obnoxious use of the term war mongering. It's insulting because if anything, this  shows that the USA is a jursidiction where no one is above the law. Even if one is opposed to the indictment, it demonstrates the virtues of the USA. It's not as if anyone in the hiso political hierarchy of Thailand would be held responsible for misdeeds.

That's  an inaccurate generalization. Conservatives who believe in paying ones taxes and respecting the rule of law loathe the man. They are on the same page as "liberals". Trump's support is a cross section and has a lot of uneducated blue collar and subsistence poor who bought into his snake oil promises. They used to be core Democrat voters.

He got 74 million votes.......He will be the nominee and I don't think he will win the Presidential election, I am not 100% sure

I keep seeing. the reference to the 74 million votes. (46.8%) So what? Biden received 81 million (51.3%) which was a clear majority. Keep in mind that Trump won the 2016 election with a MINORITY. He had 62,984,828. (46.1%). vs. Hilary Clinton at 65,853,514  (48.2%).  The Democrats didn't make a stink out of winning the popular vote.

Alot can happen between now and the primaries. People like Mitt Romney are looking  very attractive for Republicans and there are other quality  Republicans without the crazy factor baggage of DeSantis.  I doubt very much Harris would be a viable candidate unless she moves right of center in her politics. Biden did what he was supposed to do in clenaing up the mess left by Trump. Now it is time for someone younger to take on the job. There are also many quality Democrat Senators and Governors who are qualified to run for the  position. Going forward, it will require someone with the experience and skills to take on Russia and China.  As much as some people. despise Biden, he had the experience to deal with Russia, China and North Korea. He has a great deal of respect from world leaders because of his experience and steady hand. Trump was a menace, and his idiotic  visit with the North Korean madman speak to that.

You can't dismiss anyone as "not being able to win" who got 74 million votes last time

No, I wouldn't. And yes I agree that he remains a potent presence. However, the fact is that the Democrats managed to upend a sitting president and received a majority.  I offer that a large number of voters at the time just couldn't stand the Democrat "Squad". Others did not like Biden. Now that they have seen the crazies like Goetz and Green, the democratic squad looks  benign in comparison. I expect that Trump would however bleed 10 million+ votes as people have had enough of his shenanigans. He certainly can be an election spoiler if he runs as an independent.

I enjoyed your previous post, it was informative

As I understand it, the indictments relate to his paying hush-money to a porn-star using CAMPAIGN FUNDS

He and his family has previous form for mis-spending funds to such an extent that they were banned from running charitable foundations,

So what it comes down to, is that if Trump were not so pathologically greedy, he would have used his own money instead of stealing political donations.

Trump will be the nominee

Simply because if he isn't he will blow up the Republican party

He would run as an independent to torpedo any chance of a Republican winning the election

I see where you are coming from, but if he doesn't win the nomination, I don't see him spending the money he has been grifting in legal and campaign funds since 2020. He will tell his base that he will save the balance for the 2028 elections. That's why he is in the mess in the first place: because he spent campaign contributions rather than use his own money to buy off the porn-star.

Which was just as well for the US, considering that there are more illegal entries via regular ports of entry than through the Southern Border

Bob Scott, of course. Who else would write a trashy pseudo journalism line like "doubtful whether it will make warmongering America great again"??

Done. I like free beer. Trump should have the nomination wrapped up by mid-March. I’ll send you and @Rookiescot a PM then.

It's getting more interesting. MSNBC reports that Trump will not be photographed nor handcuffed when taken into custody.  Special treatment anyone? On the other hand, it doesn't look good for a former president to do the perp walk, but it wouldn't be the first time. for a VIP politician. President of the Confederate States Jefferson Finis Davis was to go on trial in 1869 for Treason along with other Confederate leaders. including General Lee. President Andrew Johnson pardoned all of them.

And now opportunistic DeSantis proclaims he will not extradite Trump if asked. Pandering to MAGA crowd, but he knows that the federal law is clear on it an upheld by SCOTUS and that Florida would have to extradite. Its manipulative people like DeSantis that make the problems worse. Too much for him to just stay quiet. Trump will surrender in NYC and drag out the proceedings for a year or two or more. Who knows, he might even be found not guilty.

I am just laying in extra stocks of popcorn for the comedy show that US presidential politics has become. Any system that allows such insane amounts of money to be spent on campaigning, and where the judiciary is elected on political tickets can only be viewed as corrupt..

It doesn't look good for anyone to do the perp walk. It would be just a bit more balanced if those LE who indulge in such shameful antics were made to do a "Twerp Walk", when their victim was acquitted or charges dropped.

I've often heard it said, "How can you trust someone that spends $100 Mill to get a job that pays $400k a year?"

It was always a mystery to me what his base saw in the man. I can only conclude it was the populist message that if your life had not turned out the way you wanted, it was someone else who was to blame. But what did Trump do for his base in his time in power? As far as a I can tell, not a lot except for childishly and gratuitously insulting his opponents frequently. His base identifying with him, made his opponents, their opponents too.

It's almost as if they were voting for a man because he was willing at the drop of a hat, to insult their  ex-spouse.

Probably for another topic, but I think a lot of people now would vote for anyone but Biden when they previously did, whereas Trump’s support is solid.

Same in the reverse, many people - majority? - will not want trump back in power. Trump created so much negativity whilst in the Office of the President of the USA and Foreign Affairs which led to him being destroyed in 2020. Trump's actions after losing the Election have only served to underline his lack of suitability to hold Office again.

Some relevant background on Biden's achievements to date.

I wondered the same after having a conversation with some American expats, subsequent to his nomination. They thought he was great and I thought out of all the nominees he would have the LEAST common ground with the hoi poloi. And he is a narcissist.

Hardly, but there are some people and areas I will not go or do not care to talk to the people who live there. And they are not gang members.. 340 million +/- is a lot diversity, a lot of hipocrisy, a lot of - weirdness, but the USA is still a great country. Let's talk about Islamic countries. No, let's not as is not allowed. Ok. let's talk about Africa. Nope. Let's not because is not allowed.

All I can say is, hang Trump higher than the CCP spy balloon the USA finally shot down if he is proven guilty.
