But it is a Muslim island, so why would you expect accomodations just because you are a tourist?

If they don't eat pork, I don't expect them to serve just because I am a tourist

Do they serve alcohol on that "muslim island"?

Surely that is haram.

I am not a Muslim expert by any means, but I think it is they just don't have much pork to serve because they don't eat it

More so than a statement of sorts

You go to my region in Boston and you can get lobsters 3 for $20 and they will steam/boil them for you at the supermarket

Not so much in Cleveland

It's just a regional food thing, which is sort of how I look at pork and Muslim areas

But obviously they dont drink much alcohol either but they manage to find that.

So if they can cater to the needs regarding booze then surely pork would fall into the same category?

No pork is not the issue. My point is the dual standards.

Which is excellent but does not address the issue of double standards.

As I explained earlier.............I had no issue, problem solved!  555

You had no issue because you simply refuse to see one. How can a predominately muslim island serve alcohol but not pork?

I will point to my early submissions on this forum

You guys care about the silliest things..............

I simply refuse to care

I stayed in a beautiful place, snorkeled off my beach and saw sharks

Had some pretty damn good chicken curry dishes, drank beers and there wasn't one time I was wishing I could eat pork, not once!!

It's an odd one that. I've met and worked with countless Muslims over the years, based in the Gulf, and although many like a drink, in the main they're all pretty much against eating pork.

My experience has been that Muslims are far more concerned about what they eat, than what they drink. Not all of course, but most.

The smell of pork cooking can be quite unpleasant too.

To people that care about this stuff, if it's really true that you can't get bacon in the morning, and that bothers you, then don't go. Further south in Thailand you go, the more Muslim it gets. They don't have to justify how they earn a living to you.

There's plenty of stuff in Buddhism about intoxication but no one's having a go at Thais for drinking, so why the Muslim bashing, ditto killing animals and animal cruelty.

And before someone comes in with they're all hypocrites. Are they really? I've lived in the Middle East, the f*****G holy land, for more years than I care to remember, and in all that time I can't recall anyone preaching to me or telling me what to do re alcohol or pig.

Live and let live. If you can't handle a day at the beach without pig, then stay in Blackpool, and rather than asking questions about why on an anonymous forum on t'internet, to presumably westerners, why not ask some actual Muslims why they do what they do.

I've lived and worked in several ME countries and found that to be mostly true.

Invariably, when teaching young adults, there's always a moment, when they see the door is closed and that none of the 'superiors' can see or hear them that the questions, "Teacher, do you eat pig/pork?" Followed up by, "Is it delicious?"

When in Saudi Arabia, if I really "needed" pork I could pop over to Bahrain where it was readily available, along with a tall cold one.

I live in the South and don't begrudge the Muslims for their food offerings or lack of one when in a predominantly Muslim area.  It's not worth getting in a twist over it and I've never thought it was a double standard, even if alcohol was available.

I love Lamb and you can't find it in a lot of areas in Thailand because a lot of Thais think "it smells"

I just chalk that and the lack of pork in Muslim areas as regional tastes and order whatever is on offer

Strict Halal food is going to be a problem in Thailand as it is very limited.

Don't think Halal Street food exists in Thailand.f course it does.

Expand

Of course it does. In the deep south, it is readily available. In bigger centers,  there will be a sign. Many of the kebab type joints in Hua Hin, Phuket, Pattaya are arab owned/operated and advertise halal food.

In respect to the consumption of pork, we eat far too much of it and they way it is factory farmed in Thailand would stop many westerners from consuming it. Ever notice that there is a Thai monopoly in respect to prepared meats and bacon and the bacon trends towards 50%+ lard?  Thai bacon is poor quality compared to the meatier varieties avialable elsewhere.

In respect to lamb, Thailand isn't the best environment for sheep raising. The heavy coats make the  lives of lamb miserable. It's not like Australia & New Zealand, where there  are rules/regulations and a tradition of proper  livestock  management. Thailand can't offer high quality grazing  as in the aforementioned  countries. Yes, there is an option of bringing in frozen product, but the Thai cold chain for deliveries is still sketchy. Lamb  is gamey and when  partially thawed and refrozen a few times, gets gamier. Also, the quality suffers. Some of the NZ lamb available has been rather awful of late. Like chewy leather. I have given up on  rack of lamb even in decent restaurants. Other lamb cuts are like eating gristle.  Australia has a large  export market to  the muslim ME and  has strict halal adherence, so they could easily export to Thailand in large quantities if the cold chainm was present.
