Thailand is responding to the flock of incoming Russians fleeing their home country with a new extradition treaty. The Cabinet approved a draft extradition treaty with Russia that is similar to agreements with other nations. According to The Star, the treaty would boost collaboration to help curb crime and does not need Parliament’s approval. The …

"The official stated that there has been no indication of any Russians sneaking into the country through illegal channels. They also say hardened criminals are not making it into Thailand, just well-off vacationers.

Many are looking to move to the kingdom permanently, citing data showing Russians bought nearly 40% of condos sold to foreigners in Phuket last year."

Thailand is on a Roll - Russian Roulette. It will be a blast for sure.

As far as I know Russia doesn't extradite its own citizens so this is a one sided deal.

They might now.

MOSCOW, February 10./TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers to sign an agreement with Thailand on mutual extradition of individuals on the wanted list and criminally prosecuted. https://tass.com/politics/1401301

On the wanted list and criminally prosecuted. In Russia that means just having an opinion against the government. How can Thailand know the charges against these draft dodgers are genuine? I say send them all back but then the putin regime are not known for their honesty, are facing war crimes charges and these people sent back will just become more cannon fodder.

Why do you think Thailand would know or even care if the charges are genuine or not?  They aren't Thai citizens.

Do  you think Thailand should now do due diligence for every person that another country says is a fugitive and should be returned?  What would be the legal precept for that?

If I’m interpreting it right, he is saying that the deal should never had been done in the first place.  And if that’s his angle I’d have to agree with him. And as previously suggested by Faz, Putin has thrown a sweetener into the deal that we’ll never be made aware of.

Mixed messaging from the Thai government on this. On the one the voted for the latest UN resolution on removal of troops from the Ukraine, and now they are willing to turn over, those unwilling to fight, to Putin.

Can’t have it both ways.

If the thugs and criminals (there are many here already) are first in line, then get on with it.

Otherwise, don't complain about Russian thugs and stand over merchants tomorrow.

They make up their own rules as they go and twist and weave archaic laws still in effect into the news laws. If they are gunning for you, then good luck.

I'm not Russian, but again, why would Thailand care?  They aren't Thai citizens.

Your contention seems to be that this is wrong because Russia may have ulterior motives for accusations against their own citizens.  While that's wrong, why is it Thailand's business?

Read: if you protest the war, don’t hide in Thailand. We’ll get you.

I hope he does do that, maybe then these cowards skulking about here will finally revolt against Putin, instead of sitting on the beach, drinking beer and playing happy families, while Putin and their countrymen commit genocide.

Now that ICC will proffer war crime charge(s) against putin, does this mean Russia would extradite Putin? 🥴

No, they are not a signatory to the ICC, so it is none binding on Russia, but it does send a powerful message and isolates Putin from the rest of the World. He dare not travel outside Russia now. Incidentally the US has not ratified the ICC treaty either.

Sure, Putin must be so scared. Just like Sudanese Omar Al-Bashir, who has certainly less influence and power worldwide, was when he visited South Africa (https://issafrica.org/iss-today/the-real-problem-behind-south-africas-refusal-to-arrest-al-bashir) and Jordan (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/5/6/icc-reverses-decision-to-refer-jordan-to-unsc-over-al-bashir). Useless ICC...

"Incidentally"? Conveniently would be more appropriate. Same for China. One can easily figure out why the US, China and Russia are not taking part of this mascarade. The powerful do as they wish and leave the others playing in their small playground with pointless treaties like the ICC.

31 actually since Jan. 2022 (https://www.pgaction.org/ilhr/rome-statute/signed-but-not-ratified.html), which unsuprisingly includes also Thailand.
