Too bad with all the garbage and fishing gear in the waters. Lived only a total of about half its life. What a shame as I almost feel more compassion towards these wonderful creatures compared to our own humans.

That is sad.  As an aside, I have great reservations regarding the competence of vets here.  A few appear to be on it,  but too many don't seem to have much deep training or experience.  We lost one cat to vet incompetence (gave the poor thing too strong a vaccination, but try to prove that) and nearly lost a dog to incompetence, recovered by another, more competent vet.

I question the competence of vets anywhere

I think they are mostly useless and absolute crooks
