News Forum - ‘Big Joke’ orders crackdown on foreigners who overstay in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Deputy Police Chief and former Chief of Immigration Big Joke is on the prowl for foreigners who overstay their visa in Thailand. Not only that, but Big Joke will not stand for immigration officers who give out illicit visas in exchange for bribes, either. Pl. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, aka “Big Joke”, made the comments after a Chinese man was tortured by a gang of overstayers on dodgy visas. In a press conference held yesterday, Big Joke spoke about the recent case of 41 year old Ren Haibo. A Chinese gang kidnapped and tortured Ren in Chon Buri province. The gang tied black […]

Maybe now they will give the "farlung" a break and go after Chinese.  Farlung generally come here for a good time, retire and live quietly. Some Chinese come here to steal, con, scam, people traffic in a much more organised way than any Farlung could manage.

I love the cynicism and the exposé of pseudo-personal prejudice to expose the general prejudice around, assuming that's the intended way to interpret your post. But just in case you were actually serious: the provided argument doesn't hold: offsetting that most farlang are ok (and so the others are bad) vs. some Chinese are bad (and so the others are ok) evens the scales.

Best 'Big Joke' starts looking for 4 young Russian guys. I was chatting to them last week, they were staying in an Hotel in CM. They were here for 2 weeks then presumably back to Russia. One of the lads (their spokesman) said no way, at best another freezing winter, at worst, sent to the Ukraine. Good luck to them exploring Thailand.

Big Joke seems to be a very busy man. Not one day without a press conference and the promise of sorting out the problem nationwide related to "today's issue". What's funny with "today's issue" is that he promises to crackdown on foreigners who overstay but not a word of a crackdown on immigration officers who delievered those student visas in exchange of a bribe. He only said on the subject "it was clear that immigration officers in Phrae and Udon Thani had failed to validate the criminal’s claims they were students."... ha ha ha... ha ha ha.... Cannot wait for "tomorrow's issue".

😂😂😂. I’ll give him a call and show him at least four places I know where retired immigration officers meet with Police on a regular basis to divide the spoils. Two even have proper offices where you can go and they will sort you out with whatever visa you want. It’s not hidden or hushed up. It’s openly advertised and everyone around knows about it.

Do think the Chinese are more heavily into scams, illegal casinos, prostitution, drugs and the evil one, people trafficking.  Don't see or hear too much about farlungs dallying in these trades.

Farlungs are more into getting blotto and maybe running around in their birthday suit so maybe the scales are not so evenly balanced.🙃

Don't even think about "exposing" corruption here especially as a foreigner. Corruption is well embedded into Thai society and this includes the police. There is no way that things will easily change nor should it in this case. What should happen is that these Chinese criminals are deported and blacklisted and that overstayers are fined and dealt with but getting rid or discouraging foreign criminals should take precedence here. After all, even those foreigners on legitimate entry visas can commit crimes.

Why is it that every time there is a legitimate comment about the behavior of a certain group of people that some self hating, overly politically correct far leftist comes in to become the self declared spokesperson of in this case, Chinese nationals? The Chinese don't care for you and will never speak up in case of injustices inflicted upon westerners and they didn't ask you to speak for them.

It is a simple fact that the Chinese, particularly in this part of the world, are more likely to be involved in running gambling scams, prostitution, the illegal wildlife trade etc. Than westerners are. As a matter of fact, many Chinese acknowledge this.

Western criminals generally act alone or in a small group, whereas Chinese criminals are almost always part of a larger operation of some sort. It's a reality that can be deduced from simple observation.

Good point. The closest thing to organized farang criminal activity in Thailand concerns the Russian mafia (haven't heard much about them in recent years but I'm sure they're still around) and eastern European credit card/ATM skimmers/scammers. Among westerners, the only somewhat well organized criminal activities that occur within or from Thailand are investment scams, but they're far less common than the shady activities Chinese nationals may find themselves involved in.

My comment was about Big Joke and his constant (daily) statements in the media everytime a criminal act making the media headlines happened. Communication and politics, that is all it is. Actions you described in your comment are already hapening exactly like that, not just for the Chinese but all foreigners. Every single foreign criminal being caught gets deported, or jailed and then deported. So Big Joke press conference is either pure communication and politics, or it is an admission that it was not happening like that before this event involving these Chinese. But it was, it is and always has been. And who do you think put Big Joke to his current position? And what is happening soon in Thailand? Pure coincidence? Nope, pure basic politics.

You omitted drug manufacture and trafficking.

China and Thailand are in Asia, so it is just logical that you find more Chinese organised crime in Thailand than, for example in the UK, like it is more likely to see the Albanian mafia or the Italian mafia acting in the UK rather than in Thailand, or Mexican cartels in the US rather than in Thailand, etc...

Also, the Chinese popuation is 18% of the world population, so if we consider that every nation has the same % of criminals, then it means 1 of 6 criminal in prison worldwide should be Chinese. It is obviously not the case so the conclusion can only be that some nations have a much higher % of criminals than China. in Thai prisons 3.5% are foreigners but I cannot find a statistic about the nationalities of these foreigners. Personally, I know 3 of them whom are in prison in Thailand right now. All 3 are from Europe.

This guy is always annoying. He thinks a lot of himself .

Give him a break ... he sorted out and streamlined CM Immi whilst head of Immigration a few (4?) years back.  I was in the building the day he kicked ass and it was a breath of fresh air that followed.

Sorry hit wrong button.

Maybe there are 18% Chinese locked up. Who knows?

Yes maybe, I do not thing so though, most if the 3,5.% of foreigners in Thai prisons are actually white people from the west. Or maybe not. All I know for sure is that there is no 1 of 6 criminal worldwide in prison that is Chinese, so I can only guess it is also the case in Thailand. Unless it is the only country against the odd. No it is not if you have any rational decent brain cell left in your brain

You spout a lot of percentages, ramble about Albanians, Italians and Mex, claim worldwide knowledge without any substantiated facts.

You then, by own words, state that you know for sure, there are not 1 in 6 Chinese in prisons worldwide.

Then can only guess how many in Thailand.

You then suggest that I'm irrational.  😂

We’re you drunk when you wrote that? No offence if you did , it happens. I never ramble nor bla bla bla…. Want some facts on the Albanian or the Italian mafia or the Mexican cartels? Find them yourself, I thought I was actually debating with someone who has a clue about the subject (I thought you knew about Chinese organised crime too but you do not). So you know nothing really. And you are asking me about facts. I need a base of your knowledge to give you facts, when the base is 0, where do I start? Sorry no offence but it is what it is mate.
