palooka Posted October 15, 2022 #254953 Share Posted October 15, 2022 All very westernised locations. First question you should ask yourself is: Are you retiring to a totally different culture or are you retiring to a cheapo version of your home country? The latter offers safety (?) security in a walled compound with security guards (haha) a decent hospital down the road for your indigestion bouts or paranoia, western style malls for shopping, food (barely) up to your acceptable standard and cheap labour to clean your western house etc. and 90% of the people you know are expats. More important are the golf course facilities. 120 + for a large beer and 500 baht for a cheapo meal. OR Have you gone native, live in a village in the middle of no where and most (99%) of the people you interact with daily are Thais? Daily costs are less, 60 baht for a large beer. 40 baht for a restaurant meal. etc. To some this is really living in Thailand.
HiuMak Posted October 16, 2022 #255019 Share Posted October 16, 2022 The video recommendations looks more touristy than real retirement.
Pinetree Posted October 16, 2022 #255041 Share Posted October 16, 2022 I live 36km east of Patttaya City, around Sattahip, but in the countryside north of that town, 12 miles from the sea. No gated community, just a few houses on the edge of the jungle. Its quiet and peaceful, but close to all the amenities of the big City that expats need/enjoy. Hospitals abound and its only just over 1 hour 20 to BKK. For me, its perfect for retirement. It all came clear doing the Covid lockdowns, when we were all restricted to our own Province for weeks at a time. Chon Buri Province has everything you could ever need here. I would give it a big thumbs up for anyone contemplating retirement in LOS.

I think you can have both aspects of life in all those places and also in the village (depending on where the village is) I've spent a lot of times in all those expat areas(not as much in Pattaya) And although you certainly have all your western life, you can certainly get plenty of local life with it as well) And depending on where your village is, there is plenty of amenities to be had in a short drive as well My wife's village is certainly a proper Thai local village but it's only a 20min drive to a decent sized town with all sorts of entertainment options and hospitals and everything you would need And like Pinetree, only about 1hr30mins from BKK
