Why would anyone want engines?

A much better use for that internal space would be for a Gift Shop. While the subs are tied to the dock and only open to the public on Children's day, someone/something has to cover the dockage fees.

If they were REALLY smart, they'd copy current airport design and route visitors through the Gift Shop as part of their tour and not let them leave without a T-shirt, model or hat in hand.

Engines are dirty, smelly and take up space; why waste a good attraction/display in an attempt at pseudo-realism?
