News Forum - US plays mischief-maker in Taiwan Strait to infuriate China

Recommended Posts

To no one’s surprise, the United States provided further evidence of playing mischief-maker in other nations’ affairs yesterday when two US warships passed through the Taiwan Strait. It comes less than a month since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan and made a number of crass comments to infuriate China. Washington says the two guided-missile cruisers, the USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville, are demonstrating freedom of navigation through international waters. This may well be the case but considering there are almost 12,000 kilometres (7,252 miles) between the US and Taiwan and China maybe navigating nearer to home would […]

US plays mischief-maker in Taiwan Strait to infuriate China

Blah Blah Blah

Taiwan isn't part of the mainland Chinese empire, despite their saying so (nor is the South China Sea, the Sprately islands or the Parcel islands). The simple fact is that mainland China has not exercised jurisdiction over the island of Formosa in over a century, and their claim is just hot air and noise. Moreover, ask the Taiwanese people if they belong to the mainland Chinese Empire and you'll hear a resounding "NO!".

I don't say this often, but good on the US for conducting Freedom of Navigation drills there, and offering at least some protection to the island; the Free and Democratic people in Taiwan deserve our support.

China is a bully, and the way to deal with bullies is to stand your ground.

Screw China.

Bob Scott the author draws conclusions based on ?  The worst part of this dangerous rhetoric is the analogy that we are somehow responsible for the murder of innocent civilians in Ukraine or anywhere else.
The naval exercises were scheduled and published long before Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan.

Shame on the BBC for allowing lies and appeasement into its articles.

Bob Scott is obviously being paid richly by China to make this article. The Taiwan straight and South China Sea are major shipping lanes and China is intent to control it against international law. Scott sees America as wrong and yet it’s ok for China to conduct aggressive military exercises around Taiwan firing missiles over it and into seas off Japan.

US plays mischief-maker in Taiwan Strait   What a stupid, uniformed title.  The US are quite rightly confronting the criminal element in China who want to subjugate yet one more set of peoples, as in Tibet and Hong Kong.  That is hardly 'mischief making' now is it.

This writer is obviously making something off China. He has an agenda that could be China's and or Russian. If the USA did not stand up against these two then Thailand prob would already be part of China as well as a few other smaller countries..

You don't seem to have the facts straight NATO is strictly defensive Alliance. It's not a threat to anyone as long as they do not attack any one of the NATO countries.

Yes, but. I remember years back, when I was at Staff College, having a debate, several actually, on NATO carrying out a first strike,  as a legitimate defense tactic and it being within its legal  remit, if its members were seriously under immediate threat.  It is far from black and white.

Interesting "news" piece or was it supposed to have been put out there as an "opinion" piece. Seems to have taken the facts of the news reports he quotes and then spins it into something else, heavily laced with his own opinion, one that I certainly disagree with much of his reading of!

To me, China's reaction to Pelosi's visit was simply over the top. For a nation that prides itself on being patient throughout their history, prepared to wait to reach their ultimate goal, their actions against Taiwan are simply silly, and I agree, akin to that of a bully.

It is clear they eagerly eye off Taiwan's share of the computer chip market running around 65%! Not sure what other benefits they gain other than an apparent lust for more control.

They call them White Monkeys

They're here, they're there, they're everywhere these days. Money Talks.

'White monkey is a term used to refer to the phenomenon of white foreigners or immigrants in China being hired for modeling, advertising, English teaching, or promotional jobs on the basis of their race.'

It's crazy how everyone thinks it's complete logic that the USA (on the other side of the world) sends warships into a very sensitive place and no one may say anything about it.... If China has warships in the Gulf of Mexico (in international waters) imagine the outrage....

America is playing a bit like that bully who is annoying you by holding his finger close to your eye en then says, why are you upset? I'm not touching you? Then gets slapped, complains that the other kid escalated it and continues to act innocent.

If people here think that the west is going to 'save the people of Taiwan', you're really easy to be fooled. None of them cares. They are just interested in the money they can get out of it. Good relations mean more money for whoever has a good relationship with them. They don't give a shit about the people.

Just like with Ukraine... We aren't doing anything, we aren't doing anything.... Except financing and sending weapons to a place, which your enemy clearly told you not to send it to, or else.... Well, who cares, let's just try, say it's freedom and blame the other for the escalation. How many people have been saved by that? How much money was made selling these weapons? It's as easy as 1+1=2

America is very good at these kinds of things.

If you want any discussion, I won't react to anyone being childish and personal, calling people being paid by China or Russia, you know the standard bs because they don't have a good argument back.

People who use this argument act like China doesn’t do the same:

The Coast Guard encountered a flotilla of Chinese warships 46 miles off the Aleutian Islands at the end of August, inside of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, according to a news release Monday evening. The exclusive economic zone extends off the country’s coastline, including off the coast of Alaska. The U.S. has jurisdiction over natural resources in the waters. The Coast Guard said the four Chinese warships included a guided missile cruiser, a guided missile destroyer, a general intelligence vessel and an auxiliary vessel.

We aren’t even talking about the multiple times a year china does the same to it’s neighbors (just ask Japan). The difference is when done to the US, threats and hair pulling don’t result like that from the wolf warriors and pinks.

Seems like a whole different situation.

As seen from the middle, China says that Taiwan is theirs. Others say it isn't. That's a very risky situation to send ships specifically there at specifically this moment. It's just unnecessary. Like, was it possible to not do it? Then don't do it.

There's no such situation like that with Alaska.

Now I get your point, everyone secretly does it to everyone, but the USA is making a point here and wants it to make the news with as outcone to make the situation more tense.

I thought that when Pelosi visited, most people and even CNN agreed it was a stupid and unnecessary thing to do. Now sending warships there is suddenly ok?

Now I will certainly agree the US was making a point. One the author makes which is the US is within its rights to sail in international waters (he didn’t seem to get much else right). However they do this to others too, China isn’t special in that regard. They did it to India last year with many of the same results (and they are friends). The issue here is China says the Taiwan strait is their internal water way and the US doesn’t have the right to sail there. It’s like they are begging the US to do so. Is it risky, probably not. China knows they don’t have the right to stop the US which is why they don’t. They certainly have no intention of getting into a war they would lose. I think the idea it’s risky is over blown by the constant howling of the wolf warriors.

What many seem to be missing is the fact the US did so with two cruisers. The second most powerful surface ship in the US Navy. That’s one step from using a carrier battle group (which they have done in the past). To make matters worse, both ships were named after Civil War battles. There are 21 cruisers in the US Navy, I think six of them are named after civil war battles. What’s the chances is all I’m saying.

Well apparently from all the commnet posts I have read, ole Bob is not getting off scot(t) free for this hurrendous biased CCP loving and USA bashing BS of an article. I wonder if he had lived during WWII then whose side would he be on as in mainly either Russia's or Germany's or even backing Japan's crusade. Certainly not the allies and the USA with this hogwash.

CCP are bullies who do not play by international or anyone's rules even if it is handed down by a court of law. Taiwan is its own country and the water ways international lanes free for travel. The CCP's man made reef islands are illegal as well and cannot wait until they are destroyed and the CCP crawls back to their own country forced to mind their own business with then their good people uprising against them for the freedom of life they should have.

How dare he write an article like this. Times change and those agreements do not fit the times for now and are insane to think should be upheld under who? Nixon El-Tricky Dick? Tibet, Hong Kong and all the other dubious things the CCP is doing to the world is nothing but a Bully who aims to control the world. Down with the CCP, and this author just needs to go live with his CCP pals..

How small minded that opinion is, as if the World was not totally unconnected  and what happens a few thousand miles away doesn't matter or count in a world context.   That type of thinking resulted in two World Wars. The US is  doing just what is necessary to avoid a third one, good on them.

U.S. had 4 warships in the area east of Taiwan when Pelosi visited earlier this month.

U.S has had 9 or 10 war ships stationed at their bases in Japan since the 50's I believe, so not "the other side of the world" militarily for a long time.  Port of Japan around 1200 nautical miles from Port of Shanghai

The USS Ronald Reagan carrier battle group and the USS America MEU are both home ported in Japan. There is a major US airbase there, along with a US marine corps base on Okinawa. There are also US army and Air Force bases in South Korea.

Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines are all US mutual defense treaty counties. Last let’s not forget Guam is in that part of the world. A US territory and unofficially called the 51st state by those who live there. The US military has a whole lot of reasons to be sailing around that part of the world.

Doing what's necessary to make China escalate it, yes. If you don't want trouble in the world, don't look for it.

Like, what's even the use of doing this? Showing that they care about the people of Taiwan? Well, they don't give a shit about anyone they claim they care about. And the result is often many deaths.

How is sailing in an international waterway, same place probably hundreds of ships do a day, escalating anything?

The world isn’t a nice place, plenty of authoritarian, expansionist, and predatory  governments out there. The last several months should have woken everyone up from their 70 year slumber. Even if you don’t look for it, it might just find you anyway.
