Thailand is looking to exploit the strained relationship between China and Taiwan exacerbated by the visit of Nancy Pelosi to Taipei on Tuesday. Reports circulating in the media say that China is to embark on a mini-trade war with Taiwan to economically punish them because of Pelosi’s visit, and plans to suspend the import of 35 foodstuff categories from the so-called Chinese province, leaving a gap in the market that Thailand could exploit. The Thai deputy PM and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, said… “Thailand isn’t an opportunist, but this would help expand our exportation.” If media reports are to be […]

Ummm 35 foodstuff categories from the so-called Chinese province it said. No sorry Taiwan is only a province of China in the CCP’s warped mind. If China want to play games banning Taiwanese imports I’d like to see Taiwan stop exports of chips to China. They’ll easily find a market elsewhere for them as there’s a world wide shortage. Tit for tat is the only way to play with a bully.

Extremely hurtful to China also. surprised they haven't played that card yet?

Then again maybe that was the purpose of Pelosi's visit, transferring a lot of the tech etc to the USA well out of Chinas reach and strengthens US future sanctions. Did I read recently that Biden had approved a bill in this area of Chip manufacture?

The tech as being the machines to produce the chips? There is no real need to transfer those machines as they would be destroyed in an invasion. Never mind the fact if China could produce high end chips, they would already be doing so. The bigger point is the fact the chip designs come out of the US and Japan so just getting your hands on the machines isn't as big a factor as at first look.

Yes the US approved a $52B bill which cover many things, but mostly to build out chip production facilities.

Thailand leadership is doing something as noble as looking out for it's own people first. You see it every time you pay more as a "Farang" than the Thai next to you. Do I resent it? Not at all. It is THEIR country.

Trade wars and sanctions are nothing new. In this case, I am not surprised Thailand, as one of the foremost non-aligned nations in Asia prefer to maintain that status by making business decisions in their favor.

Again, Thailand was never colonized and China has a history of being exploited by Western powers. These two nations understand each other and both have very capable leaders who are able to divine the future and think a generation or two ahead instead of the short attention span so common in many nations of today.
