Be mindful that this blanket advice from the Department of Special Investigations of recommending not answering calls from +697 numbers is actually in some cases, incorrect. I am not overly computer savvy but I recently found out that this prefix number actually relates to a digital VoIP address (like a VPN) that many companies use to save on Telco charges calling overseas and that the scammers use the same system to save on costs. I was expecting a call from my bank in Australia and received 4 calls from a +697 and ignored them thinking they were scam calls (having Googled that there was no country code +697). On the 5th call (within 2 hours) I figured that no scammer would call back that many times and that because I new my bank was to call me, I answered it and found that it was my bank. They were using this VoIP data call system. Many companies and Government Departments are using this system so maybe we should be answering the call and being mindful that it could be a scammer. For Farang it is a lot easier anyway, as scammers are calling Thai numbers expecting to speak to Thai's in Thai, so are not expecting to be greeted in English and will probably just hang up.
