News Forum - Government panel now fears negative effect of cannabis on tourism

Recommended Posts

The widely celebrated decriminalisation of cannabis could actually severely damage tourism in Thailand, according to a House committee discussing the 2023 fiscal year budget bill. The committee spokesperson said that a meeting yesterday was discussing money allocation for the Ministry of Public Health when the debate topic turned to the effect of legalised cannabis on the budget. Members of the committee fear that cannabis being legal in Thailand but still illegal in so many surrounding countries could negatively impact tourism, though the argument was vague, and seemed to centre around the idea of Thailand gaining a negative reputation regarding tourism […]

Well, I don't think any body really thought that the laws would be rooted in facts or science.  Got to first figure out what side will provide more power and money.  Then either scare or bribe your way from there.

The government either needs to either embrace it or should not have gone ahead with decriminalization in the first place. All this indecisiveness reeks of poor contingency planning.

Imagine that.

They should just STFU and do it

I live in Vancouver where we have about 8-10mil tourists per year

And most of those are families and older tourists

And there are weed shops everywhere.............

What will the neighbors say when I'm in my condo/apt. listening to the Doobie Brothers with the volume turned up, burning a fatty, and the smoke is wafting out into the hallway ?

''Turn that racket off for Buddha’s sake''! 🙂

I would guess the opposite to be the case.

We'll soon find out...

Prohibitionista brainwashing is a helluva drug.

Death by stupidity is frequent.

Death by Cannabis? Zero.

Ever.

This is a straight question: Has cannabis never caused a single death? That seems pretty unlikely to me.

Thailand will not be a favourite family tourist destination by choice to some. All the casino in plans, drugs and other vices.

Well, as usual, the lab dogs get it:

Thanks.

"Although the drug has a high margin of safety, deaths have been seen after ingestion of food products containing the more concentrated medical-grade THC butter."

Did they put the medical-grade THC butter on medical-grade THC toast? (sorry!)
I take it that part is referring to people, not dogs?

I'm not against cannabis at all. I was just interested if there have been recorded deaths directly attributed to it.

If they were REALLY good neighbours, they would ask where you got the dope from, order some more and come share with you.

Can't find any convincing studies that show a direct link, because the "evil weed" 🤓 is smoked with tobacco; so I understand, & that is a major contributing factor.

Here's a study about deaths from Synthetic Cannabis.

Should be part of their business case when they legalize it.

My guess... there is no going back now. But do or don't, it won't affect me in the least. There was no shortage on ganja availability (before legalization). However, Thailand knows there is money to be made (business and tax revenue). Which is the main reason they let the genie out of the bottle to begin with, I believe. And if they can't figure out how to take advantage of that opportunity, they only have themselves to blame. One thing is certain... supporters and critics are going to keep pushing their own claims.

OK. I have no knowledge about these.

I'd have to 'guess' that it's not comparing like-for-like, unless that's an erroneous assumption?

As the name suggests, Cannabinoids are chemically closely related to active ingredients of Cannabis, they were initially made to evade the illegality - since it's a different chemical.

Nowadays banned in most countries.

They are highly potent & concentrated and are sprayed onto dry, smokable herbs to arrive at a consumable strength by clandestine manufacturers.

Easy to see the potential for overdosing.

They said the same thing here in Las Vegas,NV when they legalized it. It did nothing but increase tourism here. I occasionally drive Uber for a little extra cash, and about every other trip from the airport is " Hey, can you stop by the dispensary", No problem, as I always get a kickback for bringing in a customer.
