Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has won a near-total victory in a defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. After a trial that lasted 6 weeks, with detailed testimony of the toxic nature of the marriage, the 7-person jury ruled in Depp’s favour for the most part, although it ruled in Heard’s favour on one counter-claim. It's pretty telling that both men and women as well as actual victims of abuse and domestic violence are siding with Johnny and all think Amber is a liar.

Both as bad as one another.  This case should have been thrown out and no awards made.  Depp , with all of his wealth, could have just walked out on her at any time, and she on him.  They both come out out of this looking pathetic and unsavory.

Why? Amber Heard made multiple public accusations against Depp and it cost him his livelihood as he was dropped from films after the allegations were made. . It was an op ed article where Heard claimed she was a victim of Depp that is the basis of the litigation. Why shouldn't Depp have a right to contest the  allegations that were made, some of which now appear to be false and fabricated.  He did walk away from her, but Heard's allegations came years after he left.  Yes they are both pathetic and sick, but Depp had a right to defend himself.  Had he not  done so, it was a defacto acceptance of Heard's false claims, like his supposed throwing of Kate Moss down  a staircase.

Let's not forget Heard previously won a $7 million dollar divorce settlement in 2016. So net-net, Depp is up $1 million all said and done. But his career appears to be in the toilet.

Him losing the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise had to hurt. I don't see Disney walking back that decision. Someone will give him another go. No doubt.

It was only reduced as the law in Virginia caps the "Punitive Damages" amount. 

"The seven-member jury found that Depp is entitled to $10 million in compensatory damages and punitive damages of $5 million. But, because Virginia state law limits punitive damages to $350,000, the actual amount to be awarded Depp is $10.35 million."

The money just helps him pay the legal bills. The reality is that the trial and verdict has not made her look good at all. Depp can recoup any losses in just one movie. But her roles are limited and likely to be even more so now.

An appeal might change the amounts but how she performed on the stand was unconvincing, especially when caught in numerous inconsistencies.

Depp's legal team was clearly the superior in the court and I think Camille Vasquez, his lawyer, will be the biggest winner from the whole thing.

In August 2016, about three months after Amber Heard was granted a protective order against then-husband Johnny Depp, the actress announced she would donate $3.5 million of her divorce settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union.

i e small print: to be paid over 10 years and she hasn’t made a payment since December 2018. She has paid $1.3 million of which $500,00 came from a charitable account linked to her sugar daddy at the time Mr Elon Musk. She was going to donate the other $3.5 million to a children’s hospital but has yet to do so - 5 years later.

A woman of her word? Or a very good gold digger?

Actually the jury initially came back with zero compensation for AH, the judge then informed them that if they found for any of her defamation claims ( which were actually against statements made by a JD lawyer not actually by him) then some sort of monetary compensation was required. They went back in and came back with the 2 million  in the final verdict.

Depp was awarded $10 million compensation + &5 million for punitive damages however state laws limit punitive damages to $350,000. So his compensation was not reduced. The punitive damages were limited by state law.

Please read the judgement. The judgements show a completely different outcome than that which you say.

 

1. Heard PERSONALLY was found to have defamed Depp in three separate statements that she made. Her allegations were not sustained and much of which she said was shown as untrue, such as her claim that Depp flung a defenceless Kate Moss down a flight of stairs. No witnesses to the event, and 20 years later, Moss shows up to say under oath that the event never happened.

2. Depp was NOT found to have defamed Heard. What was decided was that a lawyer for Depp had  injured Heard because the LAWYER  described heard's statements as a hoax. Although a relatively mild allegation, when a lawyer makes such a statement it is treated seriously. It is most likely the lawyer who will have to address this $2 million financial penalty within the legal fees charged as it was the lawyer responsible.

3. The judge did not reduce any compensation. On the contrary, the jury awarded punitive damages as a statement of injury despite the state capping punitive awards at $350,000.  State law does not allow for larger punitive awards. The judge's reduction of the award is not a reflection of opinion.

Heard's legal team attempted a character assassination against an emotionally vulnerable man who for all intents and purposes is still an uneducated trailer park product from Kentucky/Florida overwhelmed by his earlier fame. 

Heard was exposed as unreliable, malicious and deceitful. Depp was shown to be an affable irresponsible drunk with multiple emotional weaknesses, of whom too many have exploited and taken advantage of.

Take into consideration all the fee from lawyers, actuaries, accountants, bankers etc. They can be 2X the settlement.
