I can see what they are trying to do and it’s a decent initiative. The problem I feel is that it all feels so uncoordinated. Is this part of a proper plan, developed through a shared governmental vision? What happened to Thailand 4.0, is there a progress report due to be published?  What’s happened to the plan to attract digital nomads, how’s that progressing? How’s the high speed train coming along. Is it on plan and on budget? What about police reforms, what’s the latest KPI’s on this initiative? High priced lottery tickets, surely that’s an easy one to solve and must be done already? Submarines and fighter jets? And finally, the rallying cry and justification for the last coup,  returning happiness to the people. Hands up if you are Thai and feel happier than in 2014?

Suddenly now, after some rapper eats mango and sticky rice, it seems there’s a push to leverage Thailands “soft power”. I’m sure Prayut and his old mates had never even heard of the phrase 10 days ago. It all seems like knee jerking to whatever looks bright and shiny. Grasping at straws in the hope of hitting gold. Give it a month or two and we won’t hear of soft power anymore as something new will take its place.
