I think that you'll find (if you look) that the posts were about sexual abuse he witnessed while in prison! In prisons worldwide there are those who "go gay" while behind bars, normally bullies anyway, and rape weaker prisoners, often to the amusement of guards who themselves are bullies by definition!

The headlines make prison sound like a party.

I don’t know what he wrote about but I have seen TV interviews with foreigners in Thai prisons and they are very careful about what they say. A Thai citizen in Thailand writing a Thai book about a Thai prison will draw a lot of scrutiny, regardless of his intent. I doubt the activist was surprised this problem appeared.

What makes you an "activist" and is that an excuse to break laws?

You'll need to explain this in greater detail.

This story underscores using a VPN and a nom de plume.

He is an activist so hiding behind a VPN and a nom de plume could mean his allegations are easily dismissed as the work of a hater or a troll. An ex prisoner using his real name and writing about prison conditions would be given some credibility and consequently taken seriously by more people, including the cops in this case.

It sounds like the issue he was writing about has been lost in translation a bit.

I have not read what he wrote but when the news article says he was writing about his 'sex life in prison' rather than 'sexual abuse suffered in prison' the context is totally different.

'Sex life' alludes to mutual consent, 'sexual abuse' is a completely different matter.

In Thai prisons sex, consensual or not, is forbidden. Prisoners must be punished! And he has clearly imagined and spread the heinous, baseless, slanderous, disgusting lie that pre-op ladyboys are not segregated from male prisoners and supply sexual services. Thankfully the filthy tale he created to sully the pristine reputation of the Department of Corrective Services has been discovered and he has now been punished accordingly. We can now all sleep easily at night. /s

'Corrective Services' that sound just too much like 'Personal Services' with Madam Cyn (Cynthia Payne):  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093727/

Utter nonsense. In the case of the country where basic human rights are not recognized, one does not hide behind a VPN.  One protects themselves from tyrannical laws and tyrannical dictators.  It would be as foolish as going into battle with no armor.  Or would you say that the knight that goes into battle who wears armor is a coward and hiding behind his breastplate.  Which is why I say what you said above, is utter nonsense.  And you seriously think anybody reading this would believe that the cops would take somebody more seriously if they stood out in the village square where there is no free speech but held themselves up as a sacrificial lamb.  You should read what you wrote and if it makes sense to you you should read it again until it does not.

So you choose to believe the activist is, at best, politically naive or borderline computer illiterate? I suggested he was well aware of the risks involved and chose to use his own name precisely because he is an activist. Why did you assume he wasn’t using a VPN and pseudonym? That combination is neither the cloak of invisibility you choose to believe it is nor the only defense needed to hide your identity online.

You were speaking in generalities and not being specific.  You don't know what his awareness or knowledge level was at the time of writing.  Everything you write is pure speculation.

I did indeed offer a possible explanation aka speculation. Thank you for your public service announcement regarding VPN usage.
