Thailand has pushed over the 10,000 new Covid infections a day for the first time since October 18 last year. Over the past 5 weeks the daily reports have hovered mostly in the 7,000 – 8,000 infection range. 217 of yesterday’s number scame from overseas arrivals. There were also 21 Covid-related deaths reported in today’s statistics, whilst 88,463 people remain under medical supervision. 8,479 patients were discharged from State care in the past 24 hours. The CCSA and Public Health Minister have both mentioned the “10,000” milestone as a possible trigger for changes in their current policies and restrictions. Yesterday there were […]

If they increased levels of testing the sky’s the limit, find as many as you want Singapore is a case in point and they are one of the most vaxed and restrictive places in the world, you can’t go to Starbucks without proof of vaccine .Wha exactly does that tell us ? Seems the virus is circulating amongst the wider population regardless of acclimation status - the only number that matters is serious illness and hospitalization. in the meantime big pharma trundles on.

well, this is just the beginning. NT Australia 2 years with not more than around 30 cases, most of them from oversea return. NT border did reopen just when omicron shows up. we are now at more than a thousand cases a day. That s it ...... we all going to get it soon or latter this is the new normal they were talking about. Here peoples do not really think about it anymore , we wear mask indoor outdoor, we do with, some go to hospital, some go to ICU, some stay sick at home, some feel nothing ....... authority do not do anything to really stop it now they let it go. not sure this vaccine does anything after all....... excepted to make us sick after get it

Also reported in 'Thaiger' today : "As Thailand has seen a downswing of daily new Covid-19 infections, which have remained below 10,000 since the beginning of January, the country’s Department of Disease Control director-general Dr Opas Karnkawinpong says the widespread virus may enter the post-pandemic stage this year."

Well the 10,000 is blown and as for the other stats behind that optimism - I had a look back :-

Jan 4th, new cases 3,091 In hospital, hospitel, field units 33,505

The comparable figures for Feb 4th are 9,909 and 86473

Omicron - we have lift off !

Oh tighter restrictions based on an arbitrary number (10,000) using an arbitrary measurement (pcr test) for a disease according to Singapore’s latest figures results in 99.7% asymptomatic or mild infections. And public health officials wonder why people across the globe have started ignoring their edicts.

I guess they upped the testing then, never mind, it's now the weekend so the numbers will drop again until they get themselves sorted out and aligned for next week where everything will be fine. 555

Yes Steven. Test and go - how long will it last ?

Elsewhere in Thaiger, if I remember rightly, I read today that Phuket arrivals were nearly 4% positive and that 5% would stretch the resources to accommodate them.

Post vaccine several months later Headaches , CKD (egfr test abnormalities)   ,otherwise a healthy slightly overweight guy!

My point  is people will go to their grave or to the burn not truly knowing whether or not this vax had something to do with their demise!
unless you die or come down with complications soon after the injection’s people will never get a straight answer from the medical community ,I fear.

THA has always been behind the curve as the rest of the world goes with regards to covid. These "milestones" with regards to cases were entirely expected from my perspective. Regardless, 20k per day by end of February and still fewer than 50 per day dying should really not change anything, but this is THA so expect the unexpected and expected more draconian rule changes.

This is only the start. I'm not being a doomsdayer by saying so, because it's been the experience in my country. A sudden and overwhelming rises in cases. But if the government acts the way it did with Phuket (you may recall..."if Covid cases rise above 100 per day, the sandbox will be closed"). Then it would need to get to 100,000 per day before they do anything. Restrictions don't seem to have much impact. I would say to get your third dose though. Experience here is, those who haven't had a booster are more likely to end up in ICU (particularly the elderly). I know because I do their Funerals......

They need to ban all alcohol sales nationwide immediately.

That's the only way.

No, you only need to ban alcohol in restaurants because we know the only way to catch the covid cold is when you have a glass of wine at the restaurant. But if you’re just drinking water it’s ok.

We really have got  to stop all this doom and gloom.

Omicron in terms of the pandemic is really very good news. It is killing the Delta variant. Those who have been fully vaccinated (3 shots) and have no underlying health issues will have no real problems.

There is absolutely  no doubt that everyone will become exposed to either B1 or B2 Omicron, due to it being so highly transmissible. This creates a massive quick rise in infections, but it equally drops massively and really quickly. The result is massive exposure and subsequently massive Immunity.

The only important figures now are not hospital admissions but how  many have died as a result of Omicron.

STOP TESTING FOR SOMETHING YOU KNOW IS THERE!

If you're unwell see a Doctor, if not, get on and live!!!

A good source of information in easily understandable format is:

Dr. John Campbell, he has a YouTube site with well over 2 million followers.

Just for those who have not heard of him.

"Easily understandable", yes, as he should be since his doctorate is in teaching not medicine.

A "good source of information", though ... sadly, no, since if he were he'd know that Omicron doesn't give "massive immunity" as many hoped it would but it gives virtually no immunity at all.

Up to fourteen times as many are re-infected after Omicron as were re-infected after Delta, to the extent that two thirds of UK infections are re-infections.

But testing in Thailand isn't to see how much is there - it's primarily to help doctors to identify and treat patients who are ill.

The numbers are simply an indicator of trends, up or down.

These are not reinfections of people who have previously had Omicron, they are reinfections of people who had some previous variant.  Delta also reinfected people who had had an earlier variant.  Of course it is not impossible to be reinfected with the same strain given enough time but less likely, and very unlikely to make you seriously ill.

Ban all coffee and tea sales if you really want to stop the spread.

Caffeine makes you hyper and you talk more and spread the virus more I read somewhere

This has nothing to do with immunity from Omicron. It only speaks to immunity from Delta or earlier and whether they became infected with Omicron.

Have you had the “common cold” more than once in your life? Do you think just because you’ve had the cold once you will never have it again?

 Not correct at all.

The actual study is at

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/232698/omicron-largely-evades-immunity-from-past/

"Controlling for vaccine status, age, sex, ethnicity, asymptomatic status, region and specimen date, Omicron was associated with a 5.40 (95% CI: 4.38-6.63) fold higher risk of reinfection compared with Delta. To put this into context, in the pre-Omicron era, the UK “SIREN” study of COVID infection in healthcare workers estimated that prior infection afforded 85% protection against a second COVID infection over 6 months. The reinfection risk estimated in the current study suggests this protection has  fallen to 19% (95%CI: 0-27%) against an Omicron infection."

Previous infections with any strain "afforded 85% protection against a second COVID infection over 6 months"

An Omicron infection only gives 19% even "against an Omicron infection."
