The Federation of Thai Industries says it believes the government can slow the rate of Covid-19 infection, despite the alert level being raised yesterday. However, Kriengkrai Thiennukul from the FTI is confident Thailand will cope. “The FTI is not seriously concerned about the infections as they are still under 30,000 cases a day, which is viewed as a manageable rate by the government.” According to a Bangkok Post report, he goes on to say the government now […]

Actually as bad as things are, Thailand has done remarkably well so far. The relaxation during the holidays has caused a big increase. Hopefully, it will be confined and spare the majority of the Thai population. Europe and America are looking really bad and I can't see why people still want to travel.

Thailand is now facing Omicron. Any previous peak in Covid is going to be dwarfed by the number of cases. The difference this time is the severity. What concerns me will be the reaction of the Thai Government. Last year's response isn't the right one now. Mass lockdowns, severe restrictions won't make much difference. Nor will closing the international border. Now that Omicron is spreading in Thailand, PCR testing will become to slow and the focus will shift to rapid antigen....then that will be in short supply and public health governance will be essentially flying blind, with no statistics one wether the infections are Delta or Omicron.

Give it a month and that same industry body will be reeling from workers going off sick, forced to isolate. It will disrupt the supply chain throughout the country, as truck drivers will be forced to isolate after testing positive.

Look to other countries. The rate will be explosively exponential.

The only difference here is that people will hold back from getting officially tested unless they are very sick and need help. If you are Thai you risk 10 days on a cardboard box, a foreigner can look forward to a hospital or hotel and 100k+ bill. Until the home isolation policy is actually clear, this is is the way.

So the figures will become meaningless.
