The Public Health Ministry says the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly in Thailand and has now been confirmed in 33 provinces. Dr Supakit Sirilak says that out of 740 infections, 489 have been imported and the remainder are cases of community transmission. Bangkok currently has the highest number, which Supakit attributes to increased testing at Suvarnabhumi to screen international arrivals. “Most, if not all, local Omicron infections were connected with previous (imported) infections.” However, in addition to Bangkok, the variant is also spreading in the north-east of the country. In Kalasin province, the number of infections has now surpassed 200 […]

I think all this falls squarely at the feet of the Health Ministry and Government  ( both now to hid under their beds for 2 weeks) .

A total failure to vaccinate the population early enough and now trying to play catch up while the latest version begins to run riot . Mixed safety messages and an on/off tourist policy have all led to this point in time.

For the past two years, the world has failed in its attempt to stop the inevitable. Nature is now going to run its course.

The number of omicron infections is assuredly much higher than 740.

I know of multiple locals, both Thai and expat, in BKK this week testing positive 2 - 3 days after a known exposure event.

With an incubation time this short, it's very likely to be omicron.

Omikron seemingly is less severe for those being infected (that's the good news), but it is 2-3x more infectious than Delta.

It is now wreaking havoc in Western Europe and has already or is about to become the dominant variant.

I only hope and wish that TH is not going to encounter the same.
