News Forum - WHO warns of surge in hospitalisations, particularly among the unvaccinated

Recommended Posts

The World Health Organisation has warned that even if the Omicron Covid-19 variant proves to be milder, its rapid spread will still mean a surge in hospitalisations. Europe Covid Incident Manager Catherine Smallwood says this will be particularly evident among the unvaccinated. “A rapid growth of Omicron, even if combined with a slightly milder disease, will still result in large numbers of hospitalisations, particularly amongst unvaccinated groups, and cause widespread disruption to health systems and other critical services.” The warning comes as China, the US, and Europe implement increased restrictions, with China introducing total lockdowns in the worst-affected areas. The unvaccinated should be forced to wait in the car-park until all vaccinated people receive treatment. Then, and only then, deal with them humanely.

Those who aren't willing to help at the beginning should have to wait until the end to be treated.

Or, get vaccinated.

Dear @nobusinessofurs

I see that you have left an "Angry" reaction on my post above, but lack the courtesy of a proper response. Let me expand on my thinking and then perhaps you'll be polite enough to reply rather than simply 'click'.

I have had it with people who won't get vaccinated. Yes, it (currently) is your choice of whether or not to do so, but I see it as a prime example of selfishness and lazy-ass mooching off of good people globally.

I had some sympathy for those hesitant to get vaccinated in the early days when the official line was 'Emergency Use' or whatever your respective health establishments called it; I think that you were wrong, but it wasn't unreasonable.

However, since the early days of the pandemic, the various vaccines have gone through rigorous testing procedures in many different countries under many different trials and tests and have been approved by a large variety of countries. Simply put, the vaccines have been deemed both safe and needed to combat Covid-19 by some of the best medical minds across a large variety of countries. Further, hundreds of millions of doses (billions, actually) have been taken with minimal trouble. And, it should be noted, when there have been concerns, national medical bodies have suspended certain vaccines as needed and/or changed how/when/where they are used; it is an on-going process and one that works. Finally, we have seen globally that variants have emerged (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, now Omicron and more are likely to come) and the best way to deal with them is to get everyone vaccinated so they don't emerge at all; ask yourself why you haven't had Polio or Small Pox.

To sum up; we have good vaccines and they will allow us all to get through this crap, but they need to be taken widely for their effectiveness to shine through.

I am certain that you will claim that it is your right to not take a vaccine against your will, but I will remind you that every right has a responsibility attached to it. As above, in the early days it was okay (sort of) to not take a vaccine as per your rights, but since then the vaccines have gone through our respective societies' best testing and deemed safe, so now it is a matter of public health. Your right of refusal ended after our societies' best medical minds deemed them safe and needed.

So, enough is enough.

I am tired of hearing about 'Your Rights' when you flagrantly disregard the rights of others.

I am tired of hearing ridiculous information based on what you heard from "Some Guy On Facebook'

I am tired of hearing about 'Alternative' medicines that weren't even created for humans.

I am tired of hearing about 'expertise' that is made up BS.

I am tired of hearing about how you 'Do your own research'.

I am tired of your whining and whingeing. So tired. So, so tired.

If you choose not to get vaccinated, fine. However, be prepared to pay more for insurance. Be prepared to not be treated equally as vaccinated people, especially at hospitals and other medical clinics. Be prepared to not use society's public transport systems. Be prepared not to be able to join in to crowded public events (Sports, concerts, etc.) Be prepared to not travel across international boundaries. Be prepared, if you live in Thailand n a long-term visa, to move countries. Finally, get used to the idea that we responsible people are tired of your BS. If you're not going to help, get out of the way of the rest of us.

Have a nice day.

I've had 3 shots, but am strictly against compulsory vaccination.

There is a variety of reasons people refuse and it's up to them. I don't want to live in a place where officials decide that for me. There are plenty of restrictions already.

I do understand your sentiment, though. I work in the healthcare profession myself and am fed up with some people's attitude, too - that's not just anti-vaxxers, but scared over-cautious as well.

So, this new Moronic Variant, yes, Moronic, for all those who fear a milder version of a Virus that in the first place had a recovery rate in excess of 98% of the general population. The article said the symptoms would be milder, if so, then how are they expecting hospitalisations to increase? More lies and fear mongering to get the last people forcibly vaccinated, with a trial vaccine that testing doesn't finish until well into 2023 and later. And then there's years of studying the after effects if any, of which I hope there are not, or the people will express their anger on all those officials who shoved these vaccines down their throats amid threats of being locked down until they complied. I am vaccinated, not that I wanted to, I've never had a Flu Shot, why get a shot for a virus that is recoverable from, and even after catching it like the Flu, will have a better immunity to it and it's variants than any vaccine could offer? Amilder variant shows the virus is like all others before it, weakening and will soon disappear like SARS did. And then maybe the now Non Existant Flu Season might make a come back and life can get back to normal. Even though it should never have gone the path it did. Just weak leadership, bad media reporting and the sensoring by Facebook, Twitter etc of information from Dr's and Medical Professionals who disagreed with the mainstream media and had other opinions and ideas of what to do during these times.

When I get my yearly Flu reminder message from my local clinic I act and go and get my yearly flu jab Chaz. Why do you think they do this ??. Instead of listening to wack sites listen to what your top Specialists are advising. If your older your immune system will have deteriorated over the years and your anti body levels will be fewer that's why you come down more with colds and chest infections. So sadly if your older and contact Covid you are likely to be hospitalized if your health is not good like Asthmatics, Younger people who catch Omicron will fight it off easier because its so far not so serious as the Delta variant but older with Health issues will be susceptible. How would you feel if a member of your family suddenly needed ICU treatment but because a selfish person who refused any vaccine takes up that last ICU bed your family could pass away because there were no ICU Beds available. This is not fear mongering this is happening.

I am vaccinated but what you doing here is fearmongering about Omicron and is not the truth about Omicron. Not even Bion tech the developper of the bion tech pfizer vaccine share your views (I am vaccinated with Pfizer) you are advocating to stay in a emergency degree for a variant with symptoms like a cold and this is also by the reseachers from biontech in south africa! What you are advocating here is a crime against the people and especially the children to bring more damage in their lifes and health! And I am pro vaccine but not supporting any abuse from covid to destroy the peoples life and installing dictatorships!

Scientists can only give advice then it is up to Governments to access the risks from a virus which now appears mild for vaccinated if there are no other medical conditions against economies and herd immunity before further mutations appear.

It would be really nice to have up to date charts of unvaxxed and vaxxed hospitalizations and deaths because for example in the UK 3100 vaxxed died between weeks 46 and 49 but only 820 unvaxxed (up to 60 days from positive test), according to the NHS weekly report 50. That ratio even a bit higher than the vaccination rate!

Omicron is milder but much more contagious, so the number of infections is expected to rise dramatically (true or not is to be seen), so even with a lower percentage of hospitalisations, the numbers will increase.

It's simple math.

Get vaccinated, don't get vaccinated. It's really up to you (as it should be). I'd rather take my medicine and increase my chances of avoiding hospitalization or death. Number of infections really means nothing now. Everyone is getting sick (most mildly). Hospitalizations and deaths are the metrics that matter... (per the CDC) in the US, it's the unvaccinated that are flooding hospitals, and 1800 people died yesterday (the majority being unvaccinated). Compared to ~150 that die each day from traditional flu (2010 to 2019).

Cases (which as you say are going up) are mostly mild, but mild cases don't end up in a hospital bed. The number of hospitalizations are increasing as well (as would be expected), but those increases are heavily weighted towards the unvaccinated (in the US)... your chances of death go up dramatically if admitted to a hospital.

I agree with both sides of the 'argument'.  Everybody who medically can, should take vaccines - and there should be consequences for those that choose not to. But everybody should be able to make their own choice - vaccines or consequences. I do not like the fact that there are not enough consequences now - IMO there needs to be more - much more.

With regards to all the 'anti-vax' stuff going around, I think the reality of human nature means that when a human goes against the herd, they fell compelled to justify that decision. I ignore all their arguments and claims, because IMO they are merely self-justifications that should be ignored.  Anyone that has chosen to not take the vaccines, should shut up and get on with it. The main reasons they don't is to both justify their own decision, and to help validate the same decision by others (creating their own herd).

@Dialemcosaid it straight - it is up to Govts.  Singapore Govt has had enough and has decreed that all non-citizens must be vaccinated to get work permits extended. In other words - get vaccinated or get out of our country.  I can see Thailand introducing that for all Visa extensions as well - and I would have no complaints if they did. Then we would see how strong those anti-vaxxers in Thailand are if that happens. What is the bet that they shut up and get vaccinated.

I also hope that the Govts worldwide introduced such rules, including for citizens. No working in offices, no malls, no shopping, no taxis, no buses, no planes, nothing where you are within a few metres of other people and sharing the same air. In response to the 90% of people who are doing the right thing for everyone, I hope Govts worldwide start to back them up and deal with those who choose for non-medical reasons to not do the right thing.

Depending on what happens in early 2022, if the Pandemic continues to grow/mutate and spread, then Govts should make the message clear - get vaccinated or suffer the consequences. There are many things you have to do in life to be able to do certain things, from getting a licence to becoming officially qualified. You dont have to get a licence or get qualifications, but if you choose not to, then you cannot (legally) do certain things.   The Govts previously made Polio and Small Pox vaccines compulsory, but Covid is not such a deadly disease and that step is not warranted (yet). However, IMO there are not enough consequences for those choosing not to get the Covid vaccines.

Could not be in more agreement, only thing that surprised me was the proof of vax was not asked for for my work permit renewal.
