How are the Chinese pushing for a casino?

I disagree with your presentation of Thai society. For the most part the people around me are very law abiding, hard-working and honest.  Of course there are some who don't but not many. One day my wife left her purse on the cart at Macro. The lot attendant chased her down to return it. Later we learned he only made 300 baht/ day. My wife was very happy and gave him a reward. He tried to refuse until, I told it was for his wife not him. Many honest and hard working people.

Now when we go to Macro my wife frequently buys some grapes or something to eat so she can share.

I usually don't put myself in the position to be cheated, but it's happened far more frequently in the US than in Thailand. That said all bets are off in touristy places.

How do you feel about the proposal to legalise casinos?

  • 57% – do not agree with the proposal
  • 21% – strongly agree with the proposal
  • 18% – somewhat agree with the proposal                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                This is still a high percentage of numbers "pro" casinos.                                                                The big difference with legalizing would be the revenue that the Govt. would get as opposed to what they get now, ZERO, from all the illegal gambling that they cannot stop.        Poi Pet just over the border in Cambodia would go broke and that would probably upset Hun Sen and the ones just over the border with Myanmar would probably suffer the same fate also.                                                                                                                          Thai casinos may attract more tourists so maybe a win win for helping to get the country going again.                                                                                                                                                                                                           The criminal element are already here running the illegal stuff so no difference there, Thais are gambling illegally already and the negative social aspects are happening anyway.  Maybe some of the revenue could go towards social policies for gamblers etc.

I think a lot of those against casinos are so because of the criminal element you mention. Many of the same folks possibly don’t make the connection that legalizing the practice actually removes a lot of the element that they’re concerned about, provided it’s done the right way.

I’m for casinos in Thailand, perhaps along similar lines to what Japan is currently proposing, i.e. foreigners only with a steep entry fee for locals (especially if the concern is generating a gambling addiction).

Here we go again, another sensational poll where 1300 wise people make a decision for 65 million others. Walk into a gambling den and do the poll or walk into a temple and get a different result, just another waste of time and energy. The almighty chiefs will make what ever is the most profitable for them and no poll will have anything to do with it.

Why do people who hate Thailand visit a Thai news website to post?  Never made sense to me.

As an ex gambling addict I can assure you that it is just a tax on stupidity. Especially Asian people love to gamble. It'll bring lots of trouble if they legalize it.

When I see Nida I then instantly think Nada as irrelevant and forget about any credibility it claims to have. It is a propaganda BS tool which can be used either way for good or bad.
