Myanmar military junta chief Min Aung Hlaing yesterday woke up to see his partly-owned telecom company Mytel being removed from Facebook as Meta started to ban businesses related to Tatmadaw, also known as the military, from functioning on its platform. I don’t like Facebook and I like the Myanmar junta even less. imo, using lawyers to force social media companies to become the guardians and censors of content is potentially even more intrusive, damaging and prone to abuse than social media’s current data grabbing shenanigans and Wild West post what you want mindset. Threats of legal action against content that some people don’t like is a deplorable abuse in Thailand. I can see the same thing happening with social media companies. Anonymous accounts and browsing will disappear, lawyered up companies will go after Individual accounts/competitors and content platforms will become subservient to big brother and big business. Screw the junta for sure but be wary that what starts off as a well intentioned gesture may be seen by many as a means to an end to stifle dissenting voices.
