News Forum - PM reports no Omicron variant in Thailand yet, New Year’s a go

Recommended Posts

PM Prayut Chan-o-cha spoke out to reassure the people of Thailand that no cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the country as of now. The prime minister said that preventative measures were being strictly followed to keep Thailand safe and to allow New Years festivities to take place as planned. The government has been taking proactive steps to track down recent arrivals from southern African countries in order to test them for Covid-19 and the Omicron strain. The Bangkok Post got in some hot water yesterday over a poorly worded headline saying the government ‘hunts for African visitors” […]

The story PM reports no Omicron variant in Thailand yet, New Year’s a go as seen on Thaiger News.

Wonder what the effect on potential tourists will be when they hear the Thai government has locked up three hundred visitors for 14 days, even after they had already all passed PCR tests before flying and again after landing in Thailand. Stopping flights bringing people in is one thing, but this is on another level.

Thailand has already gained a reputation as having the most complicated entry requirements in the world (according to a major UK national newspaper), but this reaction sends out a loud message that they don't care about their visitors and you're not welcome. It also says to Thai people "we are telling you not to panic but really you should"

I feel so very sad for all the Thais who used to work in the tourism industry, because this is very bad news for high season. It's quite likely that in a couple of weeks we'll find out omicron is not a big problem, but the reputational damage is already done.

This what it is all about and God help the poor bugga who lets the cat out of the bag and confirms Omicron in Thailand before the New Year.

Personally I think it has been here awhile now.

I saw many Westerners in the last few days , looking like tourists / new arrivals , like they hadn't been in Thailand more than a few days , many walking around with no masks and seeming to be nonchalant about the virus

Careful on your bench. Suggest you carry a bottle of alcohol spray to disinfect it before sitting down. You just can't be too careful you know.

If you're gonna do it - do it properly.
