News Forum - Health officials say Omicron probably in the Netherlands prior to South Africa reports

Recommended Posts

Dutch health officials say they’ve detected the Omicron variant in 2 local Covid-19 infections from more than 11 days ago. The development would indicate that the variant was circulating in Europe prior to the reports issued by South African authorities last week. According to an AP report, Japan and France have joined the list of countries to confirm cases of Omicron, while scientists scramble to determine the severity of the threat posed by the variant. France reported its first case in the overseas territory of Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. A 53 year old man who travelled from Mozambique […]

The story Health officials say Omicron probably in the Netherlands prior to South Africa reports as seen on Thaiger News.

It's possible (emphasise POSSIBLE) that if (emphasise IF) the effects of the omichron variant are as mild as initially thought it could (emphasise COULD!) be the best thing that could happen with Covid.

Highly contagious but not dangerous, with the multi-spike variant giving giving considerable immunity to other variants.

If it takes over from Delta as the main variant (98%, IIRC?) then once people are vaccinated, maybe in 6 months, things could start to return to normality.

For sure a possibility and like yourself Stonker I see hope (although I'm not betting on it) but still mildly optimistic.

Governments are all ignoring the Doctors who discovered the variant. 2 days feeling tired no fever then back to normal. Sounds more like a mild case of the flu.

The ignorance is powered by a belief that a superior arguement is to be found in political science.

And I am wondering again they just left the parts of what the health officials said in Europe that this mutation is a good sign for them it mutated in milder forms also I am surprised they say in this report they not detected it on older people as we can read in reports in Germany and south Africa there are cases but most cases are in the group of younger generations. Why the reports are not in full what the healt officials reports saying. And why Thaiger left the part of what the German official, government officials, Virologist and next Health Minister of Germany said or left the most important parts?!

I think most people with an awareness of the current political predicament, rather than a primary task of ensuring income by whatever means knows the answer to that. And in both cases the issues regarding Omicron, whatever they may actually turn out to be, will be of minor concern to those who put their own interests to be of primary importance instead to those of the the nation in general.

Yes there are different interests and is astouning the different news and in some cases are the opposite. But what is astouning is that that Biontech (developoer of the pfizer vaccine) in Germany not share their views even it could be against their interests but they see it the same and will adopt it like they adopt with the flu vaccines. By the way the main interests from Biontech of the mrna tech is for cancer treatments and not covid. And sure vaccines protect people but there are some who want use covid for their own reasons and changing facts as we can see these days weeks.

Here about that the covid vaccine is a by product and not the reason for the mrna. It is not about covid what some want to let think people of what ever reason

"The Martians had no resistance to the viruses in our atmosphere to which we have long since become immune. Once they had breathed our air, viruses which no longer affect us began to kill them. The end came swiftly. All over the world, their machines began to stop and fall. After all that men could do had failed, the Martians were destroyed and humanity was saved by the littlest things which God, in His wisdom, had put upon this Earth."

It was not the atmosphere that killed them, it was the chemical ingredients in Mars bars. They thought they were coming for a drink rather than an eating exercise  😂

Cambodia has joined Thailand and several other countries in banning arrivals from a number of African countries.

So ... banning arrivals from the wrong countries ... oops 😕

There seems to be a balance between being infectious and being deadly. Killing off the host would eventually lead to the death of the virus when it ran out of hosts. Being infectious means the virus has a large group to infect and survive long term. Maybe that has what has driven this new variant? So if it turns out that Omicron is more infectious but not deadly, it will overtake Delta and become the dominant strain. maybe that's what happened with the Spanish Flu? Time will tell.....

when COVID happened we were told just a little hay fever ... Are we to believe them this time? in the same paragraph WHO urges countries to vaccinate and the Omicron variant would escape immunity due to the many mutations.

mass vaccination should be carried out in the event that there is no immune escape. It's a good bet !

There are also vaccines against the allergens that cause hay fever. Actually very common.

the problem currently is, they tend to have a hardtime finding the real origin where it came from.

just because it was detected in Netherlands before it was detected in SA doesn't mean anything

Agreed: no-one knows where it first came from, or as yet where it's most prevalent.

... so banning entry from an arbitrary selection of south African countries and assuming that will make any difference at all must be just about as knee jerk and delusional as it gets, however many countries are doing it.

I guess the country will go in lock-down again soon. Just the when is the question.
