What is your # priority in booking hotel in Thailand?

I assume most would say price.....

 

Mine, without a doubt, is to see if there are decent food stalls for my wife to walk to!  :)

 

I will find a hotel I like, then have to do a Google street view/maps and "walk" around the area looking at the food stalls   :)

Never a shortage of street food vendors in Bangkok although I have at times had a fair old walk to get the "ordered" moo bing and sticky rice. 

Location and cleanliness are important.  Parking also if by car, otherwise proximity to public transport - Suk 11/13 in BKK for example.

We stayed at a Suvarnabhumi cheapie one time, never again.  Despite (bogus) good reviews on TA and a free shuttle, the room was so bad we slept fully clothed and braved the stinking hong naam & cold shower next morning ... Novotel or city next time!

But now MIL and son coming

 

But once MIL is involved(very happy to have her along) it changes where we stay

 

My wife prefers that them two can just walk out of the hotel and shop/eat 

 

Instead of Ao and I hopping on a MB

Because I usually like to stay at the edge of town wherever I stay

You know Phuket well enough but I'd suggest SunPrime Kamala purely due to Ao's criteria above.  As for Patong you'd be best to find something close to JungCeylon.  Check with Brian re anywhere else.

Usually try 4 for star and sometimes go down a star for location, but go for the best room they have. They are normally in better condition and larger and better facilities.

One of the consideration is if it's near to the places I'm visiting with and if it's accessible if I go out and buy things that I needed but inside the hotel it should be clean, good air condition, security and good reputation.
