Hi there, I need to renew my Thai drivers licence early next year. I own a house in Bangkok and a condo in Pattaya. Given that the 2 properties are in my wifes name, can I renew my licence in Bangkok or Pattaya? Can I show the titles to either office or must it be the registered address on my one year visa. Thanks

If you get a Certificate of Residence from your normal immigration office that will do the job. What address is on your current TM30? That is the one that you will get a Cert of Res for.

Thanks for your reply. My address with immigration is my condo in Naklua. It's much easier to renew a drivers licence near my house in Bangkok and never really gets busy unlike the Pattaya office. I only use my condo address as it's much easier to get a retirement visa using an agent in Pattaya. I wouldn't even try that in Bangkok for obvious reasons. We have 2 property titles both in my wifes name. So it appears I must use the Naklua address which the immigration office in Jomtien has. Thanks again.

Usually it will be accepted by the police in your local area.  Banks and a lot of official institutions, no.

If you travel out of province take your passport, personally I have used my driving licence to check in to hotels around Thailand but this can be hit and miss. Some accept it others will not. 

Think it is more fear that drives the unacceptance, scared they might get caught out in some way.

My licence ran out last November while I was in Australia. I went to immigration today to get a resident certificate to renew it . I have a retirement visa and multiple entry.  They told me that I couldn't get one as I needed a current 90 day extension.  I told them I only came back yesterday,  and that I haven't been in Thailand for more than 90 days at a time since last April . I told the girl that I wanted to see the manager and she also told me there was nothing she could do. I want to drive now, not wait 3 months until I check in again.  Any ideas ??

Assuming you hold a valid Aus license, you can drive on that temporarily although it is best if backed with an IDP.

If your name is in the yellow housebook, the one that farang call 'tabien baahn'.

She is clearly an idiot.  You should have asked to see the supervisor to sort it out.  She needs sacking. The alternative is to go on another day when the stupid one is on a day off.  Of course, the danger is that you will be dealing with an equally stupid one on that day too.

My Thai license expires in a month or so.
Do I still need the Certificate of Residence? Or is the address on my license enough?
It's the same address I've always lived in Thailand.

You've probably sorted it out by now, but yes, one residence certificate per licence so two if you're renewing car + motorbike. Also one medical certificate per licence, even for 5 year renewal. I renewed mine recently in Cha-Am, and although it was not listed on their website and I had been told they don't ask for it, they did and I had to run out to a nearby clinic to get two (200 baht per certificate).

At my Sisaket DTP they only required 1 piece of all documents when I applied for the thai driver's license.  And they asked whether I wanted one for car, one for motorcycle or both.  And so I have 2 thai driver's permit cards.

Yes, I have always found it quite strange that they give one card per vehicle type…

And yes, as always with administrative stuff, there are no set rules and it can vary greatly from one office to the other, and sometimes even one employee to the other. When I initially converted my French licence to a Thai one in Banglamung, they had me translate it by an Embassy-approved translator, then stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, but I remember reading that some guys were able to do it directly at the DLT office in other provinces.

Anyone know what is required to 'move' a License between Provinces.  We just moved to Khon Kaen and my licenses have another year before expiry.

I don't think there is a legal requirement to do it (I never changed mine when I moved), but I know it can be done easily at the DLT, probably best to ask them what they need beforehand (I would assume residence certificate and passport/visa copies).

There is. Your present address must be correct on the DL. It can invalid your DL if its not and that will invalidate your insurance, both compulsory and private.

Please provide evidence of that as the consensus among many expats is that it is not the case (there are several threads on AN on it).

Do your own research mate. I checked with the DLT when I moved house. Take my advice or not, I don't really care, just passing on what know to be true. 

As an aside, If you also hold a valid UK DL. it applies to that as well, wrong address and you will get fined 1K.

Passport number and address are two different things, or did you miss that? I do not believe for one second that they said don't bother about the address, unless they were talking to the cleaning lady, but as I say, I don't really care what you believe, make your own path through life here.

      Life in the Isaan Boonies.

      It's October 6th 2024. Snaps in the boonies here. I didn't win the lottery last time. Never mind. What would I do with 6 million extra baht. Just give it to the Mrs to buy gold. Always another time. Went to the number 4 market on Friday. Bought a new pair of specs. Rated -1.25. Paid more than I usually do. Mrs Snaps got a pair also. Two baht change out of 200 for the two. Not yet worn them. Gonna keep them for a special occasion. Also bought 200 big pinkies. Mildred looked after them while I went for the car. Went straight to the farm after we finished shopping. Put 100 in number 7. 50 in number 6. 25 in ponds 3 and 5. A couple of days earlier, went to the daily market in Ban Dung. Was as busy as I've seen it. Plenty of fish. I was looking for live creatures. I was tempted by the frogs. Mildred explained that they would jump away and we would not see them again. So decided against getting them Finished up buying 7 terrapins. 50 baht each. Kept them in the mazza over night. Let then go next morning. Mildred was at school, so Mrs Snaps did the bizzo. The wall at the front of the Leccy place is finished. Don't know what it supposed to be for. Just a waste of moneyl Anyone wanting to get in to help themselves to free leccy, just has to go to the side. Must have cost best part of million baht. Bought my cheese in MAKRO last week. That's my breakfast sorted of a couple of months. Found an interesting item while I was in there. I asked the Mrs to spill the beans. She said the stuff kills 99.9% of viruses. Interesting! Best not to let Billy G know. Long time followers of the thread will be wondering if the leaning tree is still upright. Well not upright exactly; but continues to lean. Must be about 45 degrees now. It was once a upstanding tree. Honest!. I blame the catfish. The new restaurant is doing great. Ready for business this month for sure. Shutters to keep out the road noise and dust. Just need a new floor and all will ready. Cm't wait to get me noodles. Me and Mildred were waiting for the bus on the last day before the holiday. A little girl was collecting some flowers. Came over and gave them to me. How lovely. On the same morning, after the bus had departed, I spotted a little dog sown the soi opposite. So cute. It came over, and let me stroke it. Lady saw me, and came out to talk. I asked her what breed of dog it was. ''It is Pekan.'' Never heard of that one. Nice dog though. Tiny little thing. I reckon our cat Ginger is much bigger. The house in our soi is nearing the stage where it could be moved into. Just a guy and his wife working now. Doing the rendering and fixing up the electrics. Someone is having soil dropped. I have ordered a load for the palm farm. I do need some stone for the damaged road. This stuff not good enough for a road surface. though Kittens have found a way to get up on the table. Mum must have shown them the route. After the market on the 4th, we popped into Big C for a few items. Water festival still on the go. There was a new exciting contraption for the kids. Three now; and a trampoline. A young lady was watching me take some pics. She came over and I was surprised when she asked me in good English; ''Where are you from?'' ''Hi!'' I replied. ''I'm from London; England. Where is your father from?'' ''Pattaya.'' She said, and then swam off. Funny; but nice. +++++ What is it with the number 5 recently, And in Scotland there were just 3 matches. I'm streets ahead on my forecasting of the Championship. +++++ Marked out the foundations for the third solar system this afternoon. Bit tricky this one as it's right on the edge of our land, has an underground PVC pipe right in the way, and has water running through the very bit where I plan to erect the cells. More on this later. Kun is gonna try to divert the water. Rain has finished. Went from wet every day, to nothing any day this month. Me and Kun had a look at the underground pipe. Seems it is not damaged as we thought it might be. Don't know her name, but we know her as Boyz's mum. She came on the borrow again yesterday. The Mrs was telling me she will never give back any dosh she borrows. So she has arranged for her to clear up round the house. It's a fair bit of work. But better to get a job sorted than just give away money. Mildred is already travelling 'free', on her bus, for the next 18 months. Really pleased to see a koi, that Mildred released into the pond a week or so ago, come up for food today. Didn't see any of the pinkies in pond 7. Takes a few days for them to get confident and be seen. Did a 36 hour fast last week. Feeling quite good. Although my left hip is stopping me walk normal. Have to keep on with the magnesium. Still doing my bathroom yoga. It's gonna be quite busy this month. Busy?! Wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for viewing. Seez ya next post in just a couple of days. Creepy skyline.       The new duel road between Pattaya and Sattahip is impressive, and a great improvement, but it's an unregulated race track for bikes and cars, especially at night, and I have yet to see any Police patrolling it. It is also prone to flash flooding, adding to the danger.

And I don't mean that in a challenging or combative way I just mean people will(or hopefully will) find where they love to live or stay You enjoy the village you live in, that really is great, honestly But to say small town folks are always more friendly is probably not accurate I've been a city guy my whole life but love my wife's village, even with the faults that come along with most small Thai vilages(and there are faults) I live downtown and I have my 13yr old dog Every single time I leave my house without my dog, someone (if not 2 or 3 people) ask where my dog is Sometimes I've never spoken to the person..... The servers at the Mexican restaurant downtown run out to play with him The two Iranian brothers that own the small bar near us, come out to give him chicken The girls at the grocery store all know him I think anywhere can be a friendly place, especially if you are friendly to people But of course, not everyone will like the same places. And that's ok
