All doom and gloom on the Tyne this morning, I listened to a few fan channels and they are all going in on Clark for getting a red card so early in the game,

There wasn't a live text commentary available - not when I'm snoring anyway! - for the game, but I've read that Clark's was a so-called prof. foul. Are the complainants arguing that he should have let Pukki go through on goal, after his blocked clearance attempt? Most if not all centre-backs will have made that mistake at some time and, post-match, it sounded like EH was accepting it as just one of those harsher incidents, in an otherwise acceptable performance. Sad, for sure.

Now the dust is settling, let’s play The Toon Task game.

We now know who has the challenging task of keeping Newcastle United in English football’s top flight and that the eyes of the footie world will be watching how Eddie Howe + players progress as each match-week passes.

To add some extra spice to proceedings, here’s a little challenge that we can all tackle (clever little pun intended). Listed below are The Toon’s next 10 games, taking us up to the January transfer window and to play The Toon Task game, all you have to do is quote this OP into your own post and then – and here’s the tricky bit! – enter ALL your predicted results in place of the ?s.

Yes that’s all there is to it, apart from the seven-week wait until 2 Jan to see how close to reality we have been.

Date    Time*    Opponent (Home or Away)

1     20 Nov 22:00    BRE (H)   1 - 2  loss (0 pts)     result  3 - 3  draw  1 point

2     27 Nov 19:30    ARS (A)    3 - 1  loss (0 pts)    result   2 - 0  loss    0 point

3       1 Dec  2:30     NOR (H)   2 - 0   win (3 pts)    result   1 - 1  draw  1 point

4       4 Dec 22:00    BUR (H)    1 - 1  draw (1 pt)    result   1 - 0  win  3 points

5     12 Dec 21:00      LEI (A)     3 - 1  loss (0 pts)

6     17 Dec   3:00      LIV (A)     4 - 1  loss (0 pts)

7     19 Dec 21:15     MCI (H)    0 - 5  loss (0 pts)

8     28 Dec   3:00    MNU (H)   2 - 2  draw (1 pt)

9     31 Dec   2:30     EVE (A)     2 - 1  loss (0 pts)

10     2 Jan 21:00     SOU (A)     1 - 2   win (3 pts)

3 games gone and a predictable Nil correct forecasts, amounting to a 3:2 ratio of forecast to actual points. Let's see how @BigHewer and @Lowseasonloverhave progressed . . .

BH first . . .

1    20 Nov 22:00   BRE (H)    1  -  0      win (3 pts)      result  3 - 3  draw  1 point

2    27 Nov 19:30   ARS (A)    1  -  1     draw (1 pt)      result   2 - 0  loss    0 points

3      1 Dec  2:30     NOR (H)  1  -  0      win (3 pts)      result   1 - 1  draw  1 point

4      4 Dec 22:00    BUR (H)   1 -  0      win (3 pts)       result   1 - 0  win  3 points

5    12 Dec 21:00    LEI (A)     1  -  2      loss

6    17 Dec   3:00    LIV (A)     0  -  3      loss

7    19 Dec 21:15    MCI (H)   0  -  3      loss

8    28 Dec   3:00    MNU (H) 1  -  1      draw

9    31 Dec   2:30    EVE (A)    2  -  1      win

10     2 Jan 21:00    SOU (A)   1 -  1      draw

Newcastle first in each projected score. That’s 15 points I have them down for. I’m destined to fare badly in this game because of my rosy outlook KC!

Yep . . . still looking rosy, with a 7:2 forecast to actual points ratio which, for those who love percentiles stats, is a 350% over-estimate . . . That has to deserve a big smile! 😁

And here are Mr L's . . .

1    20 Nov 22:00    BRE (H)  3  -  3 See I got that right (1 pt) result  3 - 3  draw  1 point

2    27 Nov 19:30    ARS (A)   3 -  1 ARS win       (0 pts) result  2 - 0  loss    0 points

3      1 Dec  2:30     NOR (H)  2  -  2 Draw           (1 pt)   result   1 - 1  draw  1 point

4      4 Dec 22:00    BUR (H)  2  -  1 BUR win      (0 pts)  result   1 - 0  win  3 points

5    12 Dec 21:00    LEI (A)     3  -  1 LEI win         (0 pts)

6    17 Dec   3:00     LIV (A)    5  -  0 LIV win         (0 pts)

7    19 Dec 21:15    MCI (H)   4  -  0 City win        (0 pts)

8    28 Dec   3:00    MNU (H) 3  -  3 Draw             (1 pt)

9    31 Dec   2:30    EVE (A)    1  -  1 Draw             (1 pt)

10    2 Jan   21:00   SOU (A)   0  -  2 NEW  win     (3 pts)

. . . giving a 2:2 forecast to actual points ratio for @Lowseasonlover which, let's face it, is a pretty decent 100% correct (Any chance of you helping me on my FPL picks?)

At home to Burnley on Saturday, when I predict bent shin-guards will out-number goals 🙀!

Ah, a Toon win at last for Eddie, albeit against the equally-struggling Burnley and one of the 3-way TTT game has not only got the result correct, but the exact score, too . . . nice one, @BigHewer!

Updated records above and summarised below, points for matches 1 to 4 in all cases . . .

@King Cotton       4 points

@BigHewer        10 points  (no laughing, please!)

@Lowseasonlover2 points

                 Actual      5 points

Yes, The Toon have had a win but, looking down the list of the next 6 games, there are LIV (away), MCI (home) and MNU (home) that would require virtual miracles for points. And, as for LEI (away), EVE (away) and SOU (away), none of those are likely to have Eddie rubbing his hands in excitement . . . The Toon Tumultuous Task, no less.

Two answers to that question without knowing the scores. You and KC are doing “well” and I’m doing “abysmally”.

Always like it when Newcastle get pasted. In the 60's we had a vicious teacher from there, a right sadist who's previous post was at a borstal! The only thing i ever remember him talking about in class was the football team and stories about wor Jackie, whoever he was. He used to re live wor Jackie's finest moments in class, greasy haired bullying midget, ironically named Mr Strickland. Put me off geordie's for life. 🤨

A great post, @Lowseasonlover, with that Toon fan so 'eloquently' saying what thousands of others must be thinking. Right from when I started the 'Next Toon Manager' topic, I gave EH the thumbs-down, wanting Gerrard to get the job, unless he too thought the TTT too much of a mission impossible.

So, as the friendly lift-man says . . . "Going down!" . . . in all probability, yes.

Previously you mentioned how happy you were to see Man United lose and now the Toon. Just curious Sarisin, is there any team you actually like to see win? 🤔

I guess that was to be expected I dont see any manager in the world being able to salvage Newcastle this season, where would this team rank in the Championship? there is some good teams in there.

It could take Newcastle a couplee of seasons to get back to the PL

And, as Eddie will be telling his boys, "Only United, the Toffees and those easily beatable Saints now, boys . . . who knows what 2022 will bring? . . . Just think positive and cut out those stupid, amateurish, pathetic clangers whenever the ball's at our end . . . Okay?"

10     2 Jan 21:00     SOU (A)     1 - 2   win (3 pts)

3 games gone and a predictable Nil correct forecasts, amounting to a 3:2 ratio of forecast to actual points. Let's see how @BigHewer and @Lowseasonloverhave progressed . . .

BH first . . .

1    20 Nov 22:00   BRE (H)    1  -  0      win (3 pts)      result  3 - 3  draw  1 point

2    27 Nov 19:30   ARS (A)    1  -  1     draw (1 pt)      result   2 - 0  loss    0 points

3      1 Dec  2:30     NOR (H)  1  -  0      win (3 pts)      result   1 - 1  draw  1 point

4      4 Dec 22:00    BUR (H)   1 -  0      win (3 pts)       result   1 - 0  win  3 points

5    12 Dec 21:00    LEI (A)     1  -  2      loss (0 pts)      result   4 - 0  loss    0 point

6    17 Dec   3:00    LIV (A)     0  -  3      loss (0 pts)      result   3 - 1  loss    0 point

7    19 Dec 21:15    MCI (H)   0  -  3      loss (0 pts)      result   0 - 4  loss    0 point

8    28 Dec   3:00    MNU (H) 1  -  1      draw (1 pt)      result  1 - 1  draw  1 point

9    31 Dec   2:30    EVE (A)    2  -  1      win (3 pts)

10     2 Jan 21:00    SOU (A)   1 -  1      draw (1 pt)

Newcastle first in each projected score. That’s 15 points I have them down for. I’m destined to fare badly in this game because of my rosy outlook KC!

Yep . . . still looking rosy, with a 7:2 forecast to actual points ratio which, for those who love percentiles stats, is a 350% over-estimate . . . That has to deserve a big smile! 😁

And here are Mr L's . . .

1    20 Nov 22:00    BRE (H)  3  -  3 See I got that right(1 pt) result  3 - 3  draw  1 point

2    27 Nov 19:30    ARS (A)   3 -  1 ARS win       (0 pts) result  2 - 0  loss   0 points

3      1 Dec  2:30     NOR (H)  2  -  2 Draw           (1 pt)  result   1 - 1  draw  1 point

4      4 Dec 22:00    BUR (H)  2  -  1 BUR win      (0 pts) result   1 - 0  win  3 points

5    12 Dec 21:00    LEI (A)     3  -  1 LEI win        (0 pts) result   4 - 0  loss    0 point

6    17 Dec   3:00     LIV (A)    5  -  0 LIV win        (0 pts) result   3 - 1  loss    0 point

7    19 Dec 21:15    MCI (H)   4  -  0 City win      (0 pts) result   0 - 4  loss    0 point

8    28 Dec   3:00    MNU (H) 3  -  3 Draw            (1 pt)  result  1 - 1  draw  1 point

Updated records above and summarised below, points for matches 1 to 4 in all cases . . .

@King Cotton       4 points

@BigHewer        10 points  (no laughing, please!)

@Lowseasonlover2 points

With @BigHewer, @Lowseasonlover and KC all forecasting the LEI win, the 4 : 10 : 2 : 5 points tallies remain unchanged. And how will they do against The Reds on Thursday? Just ask that super-fan in the video . . . he puts things in their appropriate nutshells 😠.

Now, @BigHewerand @Lowseasonlover, with matches 1 thro' 7 and with two further heavy defeats, albeit vs the 'unbeatable' LIV and MCI, the 4 : 10 : 2 : 5 points tallies remain unchanged.

And, as Eddie will be telling his boys, "Only United, the Toffees and those easily beatable Saints now, boys . . . who knows what 2022 will bring? . . . Just think positive and cut out those stupid, amateurish, pathetic clangers whenever the ball's at our end . . . Okay?"

Now then, how about that, The Toon drawing 1-1 with United and with that Saint-Maximin guy, that I used to have in my Fantasy squad, grabbing an easy early goal from an out-of-sorts Utd . . . 'how will RR deal with that?', it remains to be pondered.

But here's the best bit . . . all three of us predicted a drawn game; me 2-2, @BigHewer spot-on with his 1-1 and @Lowseasonloverwith his what would have been a mega-match, 3-3. Boy, didn't we do well, there, each adding one point to our tallies, which now stand at 5, 11, 3 and 6 in the usual KC, BH, LS and Actual order.

So, now with weeks 9 & 10 remaining, both away games at EVE and SOU, and with us predicting a further 3 pts (KC), 4 pts (BH) and 4 pts from LS, I have to say I fancy my chances of gaining the year-end bragging-rites for who comes the closest . . . yes, really 😃!

Cheers chaps!

Hi, @BigHewerand @Lowseasonloverand Happy New Year wishes to you both!

Sadly, though, with our Toon Task challenge coming to a premature end, with Weeks 9 & 10 games both postponed and with the essence of the game being to forecast the '21 year-end situation, we'll just have to settle for me claiming a technical win (🤗!), being only one point away from reality, but also to settle for postponing the TT as well, since we all know the score and what we had forecast for those 2 matches . . . let's wait for the PP'd games to be played and see who the TT outright winner is!

Have a good one!

Very gracious of you KC, but I think you’ve got it won 🥇. Let’s see though…

Attention now turns to who the Toon can sign, or rather who’s prepared to go there.

Yeah . . . the real Toon Task, for sure! As heavy as the odds against are, I have more wanting that Newcastle will be the ones to escape the drop. And being an in-the-blood northerner, I hope that Burnley and Leeds can stay out of trouble, too . . . both clubs that have helped give English top-flight footie some of its prestige and magic, Leeds especially. As for Burnley, there's just sommat about Sean Dyche's manner and his squad's work ethic that justifies their PL presence IMO 🤞!

And, in just a few hours, we'll have ample demo, I'm sure, just how much the game matters to both these club's, although my current LPS situ is needing Leeds to do the biz! As for Watford and Norwich, I'll keep schtum, there 🤭 !

I'd like both to stay, but I think one of them will be gone if the Toon stay up. Norwich, Watford, ????

Looking at fixtures, I'd say Burnley will be rock bottom by mid-February. But they have a nice run in the last 6 or 7 games. Hard to call.

As you say, @BigHewer, those Jan & Feb fixtures will test Burnley's mettle to the full. But, like I said earlier, I have belief in SD and his players to save the day . . . maybe at the very last minute, too!

Thing about SD and Burnley is, they don't drop off in the last phase of the season, even when there is nothing to play for. You can always get an honest performance out of them.

Consider that and the gentler fixtures at the end, and I think they have enough to stay up.

Trippier in for the Toon, who else still to come? Isak? Barbosa? Alli? Lingard? Digne? Van de Beek?

Seems like everyone moving in January is being linked to the magpies.
