A wild elephant stomped a Thai reporter to death in Chanthaburi on Friday. The reporter was on the scene taking photos of a mission to administer medical treatment to the animal which had been severely injured in a fight with other elephants. Having worked in remote locations based in both Eastern and Western Africa the most dangerous wildlife apart from leopards and venomous snakes  were the elephants and particularly the male ones when in heat.

Asian elephants though less agro can still turn rabid at the drop of a hat. This as you said Gummy is yet another example of that.

... and a very sad but unfortunate example of reporters getting too close to the action, despite warnings from the professionals.

Even if an elephant were no more aggressive and likely to charge and trample than a chihuahua, their sheer size alone makes them deadly dangerous.

So sad for the family of this reporter.... also sad for the elephant. It's a wild elephant. Obviously they act instinctively. It is a lesson for Thailand, that these beautiful animals, must be treated with respect. I will never ride an elephant when I go to Thailand, because of the cruelty that happens, just so tourists can ride them. I am glad to see the "retirement parks" for elephants, where they are treated with respect and kindness.
