Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai)

Recommended Posts

In the provinces of Chiang Mai and Yasothon and the north-eastern region of Isan, the climate is very dry. There is an annual tradition in each of these areas to construct projectiles made of bamboo. The bamboo rockets are around 20 feet in length and are fueled by a mix of Sulphur and charcoal and then launched into the air to remind the god Phaya Thaen of his promise to provide rain, as it is needed to help the crops grow.

Did this festival go ahead this year in each province and region and can anyone provide dates when the festival will run again?

Firmly on my bucket list but we never go back to Thailand outside of the weather sweet spot high season November to March so I might never get to see except via You Tube.

I was there in 2019. Great festival and well worth attending. Probably only 20 foreigners in town.

It was a 3 day party.

Street parade is amazing and the rockets on Sunday have to be seen to be believed.

I hope to go to many more.
