Alavan Posted November 5, 2021 #99277 Share Posted November 5, 2021 I wonder how those superyachts will enter the marina. Even with a draft of less than 4 meters you have to wait for HW. Or did they dredge the channel? My last ride, a SuperYacht by Aussie standards, was an ultra-modern 100' schooner, 2 masts, with 3 engines and a draft of 2.5m. It wouldn't even rate as a SuperYacht in US or Europe. The type and size of (mainly) power yachts entering the boat show will navigate the channels easy enough. Too small as the Thai government are only after $ billionaires to give them money, what you described is only for mere THB millionaires. Something like this the billionaires have to anchor offshore and use the "tender" that you described to pop ashore Link to comment https://talk.thethaiger.com/topic/7722-news-forum-thailand-international-boat-show-to-kick-start-luxury-tourism-revival/#findComment-99694 Share on other sites

Sorry, my old schoolmate had a 68’ Azimuth motoryacht and he had to wait for the tide to move it in and out of the Phuket Boat Lagoon and navigate the channel with mangrove on both sides and then the approach with spar buoys. What keel did that 100’ schooner had? A 100’ Baltic sail yacht has a draft that can go to 5,8 meters. Sailyachts of 100’ would probably have a draft of 3’5 meters, but you need a few feet of keel clearance so sail. And motoryachts can manoeuver only at very slow speed with such a small keel clearance, due to squat. and dredging the channel, to dredge a channel 1 meter deeper you need at least a 1/6, that means a slope that is 6 meters wide to reach one meter extra depth. Yachts is certainly not my speciality, but I worked at sea and in port, sailing tankers, general cargoes, container vessels, cross channel ferries and one short trip on an LNG-carrier. AFAIK the boat lagoon entrance is ~3m at MHW so even my 2.5m would have entered ok on a near full tide. Easier on a Spring high. Never got this far anyway as the owner had to leave us in Bali and I eventually returned to Aus with just my 2 crew. I was brought up with them because of my Dad but my career took me on a totally different path. Still take a passing interest though. Missed my vocation I think because if I knew then what I know now ( how often do we say that) I would be a recruiter for some of the prettiest all girl screws crews Link to comment https://talk.thethaiger.com/topic/7722-news-forum-thailand-international-boat-show-to-kick-start-luxury-tourism-revival/#findComment-100107 Share on other sites

As you say, -3 at MHW, must say I don't know the tidal range on that place, but you think that is enough for a super yacht? I don't speak of a mega yacht. I know there is a marina near Sarasin bridge where the water dept is bigger, but those 2 marina's, Phuket boat lagoon and the other, are not suited for super yachts. And you mention it, working with the tide. You think a yacht owner loves the captain anchoring near the fairway and the owner and the owner and guests landing with the tender from boat lagoon? Anyhow, they can do whatever they want, I am certainly no specialist on yachting, but as a master mariner merchant navy, ending my career as chief harbourmaster of a large European port, I hope I know what is acceptable for us. I doubt there will be any true superyachts at the boat show.
