Facebook is getting rid of its facial recognition system, which currently identifies and suggests tagging of individuals in photos and videos. The company’s vice-president of artificial intelligence, Jerome Pesenti, says the technology is being ditched due to uncertainty over its use. “Regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use. This is a good thing.

Yes, it seems like the purpose of Facebook is to publish everything (which is why I don't use it), but the facial recognition thing goes to whole other level.

Imagine that you are in a bar and someone secretly snaps your photo, up-loads it to Facebook, then gets your face scanned. In the next few minutes, a complete stranger will be able to access whatever information Facebook has one you, stuff that both you AND others have posted. Imagine that you are female and it is some creepy guy who gets ahold of your address in minutes. Scary.

The billions and billions and billions of bits of meta-data doesn't scare me that much and can actually be useful; it is the small, specific stuff that is so dangerous to individuals.
