News Forum - Alcohol ban predicted to damage Thailand’s reopening, reputation

Recommended Posts

A bunch of inebriated people packed together in a bar breathing and thereby exchanging respiratory droplets with each other. What could possibly go wrong ? Imagine what will happen if there are serious outbreaks in the various tourist areas a few weeks after the re-opening. The Land of Smiles will turn into the Land of Frowns in no time. And any would-be tourists will steer clear of Thailand.

Read the thread again from the start,  my reply was about a comment where only  tattooed shirtless tourists drink in Thailand not about the consequences re the virus and drinking.

So only the only the "tattooed shirtless tourists" are likely to be any sort of problem "re the virus and drinking" ... I see.

If you are not testing people then how can you know, a crystal ball?

The grass in my back garden is never overgrown, I know because I never check it.

I may be wrong, but the last time I looked testing for Covid, whether in the UK or anywhere else, reflected how many people had Covid, not how many were dying from Covid 😂.

EXACTLY - setting back the possibility of any sort of recovery by months if not years just as has happened in so many other countries that opened up and loosened restrictions too soon.

A questionable short term gain, in return for a probable massive long term loss.

The difference is that "in the UK, France, etc" most people are fully vaccinated with an effective vaccine, while here they're not.

... and also, of course, that in the UK two or three times as many are dying from Covid every day ...

These fools are happy to walk over bodies for a drink ..... disgusting fools . No wonder they all die alone at the end of a bar

... unfortunately that would also necessitate the "real tourists" also staffing the bars, the taxis, and the motorbike taxis, etc, to work effectively so that may not go down too well ... 😂 ...

You can see it was meant as a joke, your comment re taxis though does remind me of a visit to CM where we met a couple of Ozzies and we took a couple of tuktuks from the restaurant to the next place we went to and  one of the Auzzies wanted to drive so I and the tuktuk driver sat in the back while the Ozzie drove, he did get a nice 500 baht tip though.

Oh the old days...........

That is why I am staying away at the moment, I will wait to see what happens before going to Thailand.

What a strange contradiction in your comment... So the UK where most people are fully vaccinated, many already 3 times, still  3 times more are dying from covid every day. So what does this tell? Well it looks more and more like it is the best we are going to get.

Do you (or anyone) know how many people died from tuberculosis in 2020? 1.5 millions...yes just 300 000 less than the 1.8 million reported deaths from covid 19. Do you know how you catch tuberculosis? Exactly the same way than the virus sars-cov-2. Does anyone care? Or even talk about it? Well no cause we westerners have good vaccines we know very well for years so it does not affect us, only countries amongst the poorest and far away from us. But covid does so therefore suddenly we all go mad about it. If covid 19 had killed 1.5 millions in the same countries than tuberculosis, would you or anyone talk about it? Would the pharmaceutical industry rush like mad to do vaccines that have never been used on humans for countries that cannot even afford them? Well I think we all know the answer...

If covid is there for another 10 years, and let's face it, even vaccinated, it would still kill people (95% being amongst the most vulnerable for the obvious reasons), shall we carry on living like living deads? And having a drink, as we all agree apart from the one or two commentators whom seem to live already in a different world, is part of a socialising process, a simple basic human process. For most of us it is part of socialising. So what do we do if it is there for another 10 years? Stop socialising? Stop living? On that note, I raise my bottle of Leo for the sake of socialising: cheers!

I don't see, the original comment from whoever it was stated the only tourists who drink in Thailand are shirtless tattooed farangs, I of course disagreed.

"I may be wrong, but the last time I looked testing for Covid, whether in the UK or anywhere else, reflected how many people had Covid, not how many were dying from Covid 😂."

And in an open country where there has been mass vaccination it is what you would expect that is the point of vaccinating people.

Keep the alcohol ban!

Alcohol is responsible for more deaths and misery than Covid, while the sale of cheap booze in Thailand attracts the scum of the earth which brings associated crime.

Many high spending tourists avoid Thailand because of the unshirted tattooed hordes’ embarrassing behavior at Pattaya, Phuket and Khao San Road. Let’s get rid of them and use this opportunity to up our game in Thailand.

May I suggest a nice holiday to one of these world class tourist destinations is better a fit for you https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/14-countries-where-drinking-alcohol-is-illegal.html

I have never seen any people dead at the end of a bar in Thailand, send me a picture.

What about people having a glass of wine in a restaurant, do they die there too?

I read your link, can you do me a favour and put me in touch with a travel agent who can book the holiday for me , I will be off as fast as I can :)

Any of the Brits transiting through Bahrain/Doha/Abu Dhabi or Dubai would probably be better off just throwing the thai leg of their ticket in the bin and go into town for a fortnight in the middle east.

you can go out at night and have a drink or ten,it's visa on arrival,no nonsense involved, they would like you to visit and spend some money.

there is certainly no shortage of sun sand and sea.plenty of totty about the place if you know where to look as well.

why anybody would willingly pay a king's ransom and jump through all the hoops to get into stalag thailand is beyond me.

I will not be at all surprised if 2 weeks into november there will be yet more rule relaxation when just about nobody shows up at international arrivals.no doubt the government officials will be mystified by the lack of people beating the door down to get in.

Damage Thailands reputation among barflys who value alcohol above actually enjoying life. Who would want to attract that calibre of foreigner anyways.

In my circles, the decision to ban alcohol has been favourable for the countrys reputation.

I suspect thats a sentiment shared by the majority of high quality tourists.

virtue signaling at it's finest. did you ever stop to think that there are people who drink to socialize, not to get drunk?

the arrogance you display is astounding.

You are for sure no quality tourist and you have never been in Monacco. Posters like you would never attract high quality tourist and in Monacco they would kick you straight out for telling the people they should not enjoy their Champagner and red wine. Posters who know nothing about world class destinations want to talk about high quality tourist but could not afford to travel there and have zero glue how they enjoy life there.

So what does this tell?

My guess would be that solely relying on vaccines even when 70%+ of the population are vaccinated doesn't work, so you need to take other measures as well (not instead) until maybe 95% are not only vaccinated but have built up immunity.

Looking at the British expert medical and scientific view, their is that solely relying on vaccines even when 70%+ of the population are vaccinated doesn't work, so you need to take other measures as well (not instead) until maybe 95% are not only vaccinated but have built up immunity.

Looks like I made a lucky guess 😂.

You are from circle who can not afford to travel in any high class destinations in the world. Low level circles who have never been a high quality tourist talking about high quality tourists. In Monacco, Riviera and any high end tourist destination they would kick out your circle if you tell them not to drink Champagner, red wine or go in their clubs. Or hang out and drink champagner at their favourate bars at the beach and have high qualuty food. Yoour circle doesnt understand the difference between a 3rd world country, clowns and first class destinations. As I spent countless times for holidays there I know such clowns they would be sent out or call the ambulance.

FWIW I agree with you 100% on all counts, @mcambl61, but unfortunately the net result as far as Covid is concerned is still much the same whether it's a sweaty tattooed pleb swilling Leo or one of us delicately sipping Krug.

But it’s not. I’m a upper middle class, high quality tourist and if i am to return to thailand i want there to be nightlife as do millions of other people. You sound like some boomer who eats dinner at 4pm  and goes to bed at 7pm..

This guy was never in a world class destination and never been a high quality tourist. He has never seen Monacco in his life or could afford to go in a restaurant there. And for sure he would be not welcomed there to tell people not to enjoy their wine, grappa and champagner there. He is on the low level but want to talk about high end.
