News Forum - Border shacks to be demolished for aiding Burmese immigrants

Recommended Posts

In a unique twist on a common encroachment story in Thailand, vendor stalls on government land in Kanchanaburi along the highway in Sangklha Buri are being ordered to be demolished. But this time it’s not a land ownership debate, rather the government suspects that the vendor shacks are being used to shelter people after crossing the Burmese border illegally. These shacks along Highway 323 are being ordered to remove them after a team of police visited this afternoon along with local leaders and soldiers from the Lat Ya Task Force, according to the Sangklha Buri police chief. At least Thailand is making an effort. Maybe the US could take a few steps.

I don't see how demolishing shacks would stop the influx of illegals, with the current situation in Myanmar its surprising that even more haven't crossed over the border.

If the Thai government were serious about stopping these illegal migrant workers from Myanmar. They would start prosecuting the owners and bosses of the large companies that are offering these poor people work at ridiculously low rates of pay.

Given the situation in Burma at the moment, can you really blame them? They're not shacking up for a night of Thai hospitality!

In a sense the suspicion is that actually they are and the vendor stalls/dwellings have a dual purpose ?

Sad as it is that in the reality of the fact the people they are squatters on public land with no legitimate permission to be there and although can claim they simply eking out a living as best can there is probably some observed or reported activity they get a commission for also providing a pickup point for the traffickers. Always easiest to pick off the low hanging fruit in a display of law enforcement rather than go after the high .

Nail on the head hit !!  And if anyone does not think that 'they' suddenly decided to give prisoners 'work experience' so that they could learn some life skills, then I have some swamp oceanfront land for sale.  The only reason prisoners are now working on building sites in Thailand, is because the supply of cheap underpaid laborers from Myanmar and Cambodia and Malaysia has slowed down (or they are still locked away in their work camps due to Covid).
