Ubon Ratchathani lends its name to both this province in north- eastern Issan and to the city that is its main administrative area. The itself means “the city of Lotus”, as evidenced by the wide range of Lotus flowers often seen in brilliant display.

The province features plateaus and mountain ranges with the Mun River running through the middle. It both Cambodia and Laos which together have been coined “the Emerald Triangle” in recognition of their magnificent green landscapes.

Adding to Ubon Ratchathani’s natural appeal, Phu Chong Nayoi and Pha Taem national parks are two of Issan’s most unspoiled and unvisited natural preserves. Additionally, the city’s annual candle festival is one not to miss in July, when it is held to mark the beginning of the rainy season retreat for Buddhists. (see picture below)

The area is also noted for its hand-woven cotton Cloth, loincloth, silk cloth, folk pattern pillows, and brass wares. For food lovers, white pork sausage, Thai sweet sausage, and north-eastern-style fermented sausage are the must-try!
