On a slight variation. We all know how appallingly inadequate the driver training and testing is in Thailand. Does anyone have any factual knowledge as to how the the Thai HGV training and testing differs from the car and motorcycle tests ?

I thought the 1st section of Q2 was entirely optional ?

Of course the rear view mirror is novelty for Thais, predominantly males.  There used to be jokes about women thinking the rear view mirror  was for putting on make up etc. Well Thai men seem to use it for seeing how much puss comes out whilst squeezing their zits.

No I didn't claim that. That reference was regarding the eye and reaction tests, which I had to do when I got my first Thai license (with International Permit) and subsequent renewals of that.

I would suggest it depends on location, like most government offices in Thailand.

Traffic lights 

Depth perception 

Braking reaction time 

Spacial awareness ?, coloured lights at right and left side of head.

 

Renewal of 5 year license.

Getting people to drive on the correct side of the road would seem sensible to me.  Who ever heard of shifting gears with their left hand. OK, if your a  southpaw, but most of us aren't.

Yup, some find it hard to believe that what goes on at their DLT/Immigration/Amphur isn’t necessarily followed by the other 75 provinces in Thailand.

Managed to avoid the VDO last time but recently watched the same (or I guess a similar) one for the online part of the "training" for my next renewal. One of the interruptor questions that comes up was something like "If you were intending to make a turn at the next junction, how far ahead would you start to indicate? I think the choice of answers was 5, 10 or 30 metres and their "correct" answer was 10, which is about one second of time at about 40 kph! Just part of the reason that the driving here is so bad!

NB: I kept putting in the maximum 30m answer and passed anyway! Tickety boo!

It is very disturbing how many expats stay for years in Thailand and never get a Thai licence of any kind.....which means they are driving illegally

You need a license to get insured.  When we bought a new car the sales person asked for my license and I showed the IDP. She insisted that I get a Thai license the following day.

OK I'll give you that one and get a automatic shifter. But it gets confusing when I reach for the turn signal lever and the windshield wipers go off.

What’s ‘depth perception’ ? Or did you combine it with your diving licence ?

Depth perception is the “ 2 sticks in a box “ test , align one stick to the other by moving it backwards and forwards.
