If any of youz guys are interested in the American Italian Mafia this is a great audio book called 'Murder Machine' about one the most murderous gangs in Brooklyn (and the country) during the 1970's & 80's. It's an audio book and fairly long but I promise if you have interest in the subject you'll get hooked quick. One of the best I've read on the topic. Real slime ball sh*t about the Roy DeMeo Canarsie Brooklyn crew who killed & dismembered 100+ people in the Gemini Lounge & around Canarsie & Bath Beach Brooklyn all while leading a major car theft ring. You'll like it, just make sure you pause before you get distracted, there's a lot packed in there.

I grew up in a mob neighborhood. One of my friends' dad ran a "vending machine" business. It was great. Put dirty money into the machine and it came out clean. A neighbor ran the numbers game uptown in Harlem. He got pinched by the Feds in Las Vegas and his wife and kids at home just vanished. Witness protection, probably. Just walked away from their brand new house. The guy who lived diagonally behind me spent his days jogging. I used to walk his dog with mine so they could play. He got shot in a hit while he and some friends were coming out of a bar in Brooklyn late one night. Nice people, just don't get involved in the business side of things with them.

I like reading about the little petty beefs and like you said small hustles like vending machines, numbers games and all of that that you hear about once the stories get separated from the main bosses of the families.

I read that Donne Brasco book and I remember him talking about vending machines & guys hitting parking meters with hammers trying to bust open the coins and petty stuff like that.

Here's ol Nino Gaggi's story....

What neighborhood?

My longtime ex-gf was from Bergen Beach Brooklyn

All of her friends were married to mobsters

Most were absolute scumbags

I had to be around them for weddings, etc

Just low class mopes......

My 1st time ever in Brooklyn, my 1st date with ex-gf

Went to a notorious catering hall, The El Caribe for the owner's son's engagement party

That was surreal    😀

I lived in Bay Ridge in my 20's as well

I lived on Staten Island just up from Dongan Hills. I know what you mean about surreal. We'd have these random characters show up at the house with a typed up business card claiming to be real estate agents with interested buyers. They were trying to build a little enclave.

I went to Wagner College in Staten Island  😀

Lived by Farrell High School after college right above Oakwood Train Station before moving to Bay Ridge

But the more important question then:

Joe&Pat's or Deninos?

I'm a Joe and Pat's guy...... 👍

Totally. And that's back when I could eat a whole large. Only place I've ever seen where they used big cubes of mozzarella.

Yeah the cubes of mozzarella and the pepperoni cups

Their Italian Cold Cut sub was amazing as well.

They have a new one in Manhattan, lower East Side

But I didn't love it as much as the original place

Wokeness? Fuggettaboutit! Old school New York mobsters lament that the mob has gone soft, blaming millennial gangsters for being 'wimpish', tweeting photos of their fugitive dads and sending threats with a text instead of their fists
