The world’s first oral treatment for Covid-19 could be available in Thailand from December, as a draft agreement nears completion. According to a Bangkok Post report, the Department of Medical Services chief says the draft procurement deal is awaiting legal approval from the government. Somsak Akksilp says his department is in talks with the Thai subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Merck, manufacturers of the Molnupiravir pill, which has been shown to reduce death and hospitalisation with Covid-19 by 50%. The drug works by creating an error in the genetic code of the virus and is the world’s first antiviral oral medication […]

The issue with the statement is that it quotes "likely to arrive" . That suggests they currently have no firm dates and it is just being hopeful that it may. Now we know how this Government's plans and expectations end up don't we ?

Well, it's all scientific.

You add X weeks until the agreement is signed, then add Y weeks for them to cancel and renegotiate, then add Z weeks for denying that they ordered, cancelled and renegotiated. Then about a month for the FDA to approve what other countries by then have already approved, then reserve 90% for "special" groups and 5% for research.

So then from the 200.000 courses, about 10.000 will be available to the public for minimum $1000 way beyond the quoted date.

Easy really.

Hopefully, they are not using same people who procured Moderna

This is a good development, especially for those who ave contracted covidand are in the first stages of it. Once a person tests positive, they can't be given vaccines, so this fills the void. It is one of a number of solutions that are being worked on. In my country one university research institute is working on a peptide solution that kills Corona Virus (no matter what variant) and prevents transmission. As a global community we are getting closer to a solution. It's a matter of time.

Don't be too positive. This is not for those who just test PCR positive.

This is only for hospitalisations with mild to moderate symptoms that don't stabilise and seem to worsen. At $700 cost per course don't expect them to hand it out like sweets.

Let's see how many will accept a $700 5-day course of treatment with only emergency approval from Merck, when they refused a $20 vaccine from the same big pharma that is now fully approved.
