Very true, hadn't thought of that.  But also as an afterthought if casinos were allowed here some of the ladies working inside ,well the pretty ones, would have good opportunities to increase their incomes. Don't know what happens in  Oz but certainly in Macau there are a good few ladies from Thailand managing to assist the punters and in turn earn themselves a decent income without having to flash their bods or drink copious amounts of alcohol in bars or gogos. Now they may end up in the same "positions" but surely the way they got there being more beneficial is better ? Just my view that if it is the lifestyle they choose to help themselves and families they may as well do it for the most money and in Thailand It would be a bonus to them.

Actually there are a lot of very pretty Thai girls working overseas in Macau and many other places - because of the Junta's crack down in Thailand, and the demand from outside Thailand.  Those who frequented Pattaya etc. from 2016 onwards said on many social forums that many of the really good looking girls had 'left the building'.  And they aint coming back either - they are making a lot more money overseas than they ever did in Thailand - and far less trouble and less 'payments'.

The Thais girls were there before the junta. I first went to Macau in 2007 and a few Thais then. Been back 4 times since, the last in 2017 and a few more were there. I don't think the Junta can take the credit for Thai ladies common sense and business acumen.😉

Good point - but they certainly did nothing to stop them moving away - in fact that is what they wanted.  A bit like the western Expats, which is really the people that come to Thailand for a holiday and like the place so much that they come back again.  As far as I see it, the Chinese tourists did not really go for the entertainment venues - it was mainly Thais and Expats.

Agreed but the Chinese in Macau, the real spenders, are drawn to the Thai girls like a magnet. My point , badly made perhaps, is that if Pattaya had casinos then apart from the high rollers at the casinos ( which the Thai regime dreams about ) it would also benefit the Thai ladies as it would be "in-country"

I see - yes that makes sense.  As long as they can stop the local Thais throwing away their money (the poor ones) then yes it is a good idea.  Maybe one day it will happen - maybe. Not under the Junta - but maybe after 2023.

I agree with that - but unfortunately the Casinos if legalised would want the locals to come - easy money for them.  Unfortunately, Casinos make their money from people that can really not afford to lose.  I guess maybe that if they had a very high 'entrance fee' then that would stop the poorer locals losing their money - but what bet that rule is changed later because it is 'discrimination'. Even in Australia with our Nanny State controls, Casinos are always getting into trouble - they are not a good thing overall - like drugs.

Casinos like most forms of gambling are parasites. They attract undesireables, bring organised crime, corruption, money laundering and a host of social problems. They corrupt sports and pretty well everything they touch.  I cant believe people actually think they are a good idea. The taxes they raise are not worth the crime, social problems and misery that accompany them.

No different to those gambling on shares going up and down as they are the worsts parasites. Gamblers in a casino can only ruin their own lives whereas those dealing in shares can ruin thousands of others. They are the real parasites in this world in my opinion.

Investors take varying degrees of risk, but it's all calculated. Casinos are 100% risk.

The problem is they dont just ruin there own life. They ruin the lives of their family. Many gamble everything away until they and their family are destitute. This is especially difficult for families in poorer countries with little or no social security. Yes the share market could be considered a form of gambling but you have at least bought a share in an assett that may recover in price. In  gambling once your money is gone its gone.

Apparently the Thai government’s goal is to rebrand its tourism reputation by permanently removing Thailand as a sex tourism destination. bars, entertainment venues, freelancers, bar girls, happy endings massage businesses, soi cowboy, nana plaza, Phuket waking street etc all will no longer be part of Thailand tourism. I guess you can’t blame the government for wanting a better perceived tourism reputation.

That said,  all of the above is not important to me as I have a LTR with a beautiful Thai lady whom has a normal job and earns more than the average retired expat.

However the absence of the popular entertainment venues is going to have a major negative impact especially after the pandemic ends or at least stabilizes. Thailand will lose much tourism to other Asian country’s which continue the entertainment venues.  Just saying

Japan's "mizu shobai" (sex industry) probably makes more money (I'd guess) than Thailand's but is a whole lot more discreet.

With the rise of apps and my suspicion that the worlds oldest profession ain't going nowhere this may be mostly optics/rebranding.

There's no need for women standing in bikinis on the street or in front of bars is there?

Japanese "karaoke" clubs provide a discreet front for many things, sometimes even singing :-)

And if my read on how conservative Buddhist Thais might feel about the sex trade taking a hit, it's that they might be OK with it getting toned down or "going away". Of course , I could be wrong.

if you want a LTR you don't need to go to NaNa anymore, and  maybe you never did :-p
