Packs of cigarettes are going to get a little more expensive. The Thai Cabinet just approved a new excise tax structure for cigarettes. Retail prices for a pack are expected to rise by 6 to 8 baht. The Finance Minister says the new tax structure is expected to go into effect on Friday, but it still needs to be published in the Royal Gazette to be made official. This tax rise is nowhere near sufficient; hike it by 500 Baht on every pack sold.

The only way to get people to stop is to price it out of their range. If the government raises it a bit, then all it will do is let smokers take away needed things from their families. Children need new things for their school? Smokers will pay extra for their smokes first. Wife/daughter needs medicine? Smokers will use money for their habit before buying medicine. Need insurance for a bike/car? Smokers will let it lapse to pay for their filthy habit before doing the right thing. Need money to ensure the health and well-being of a family member? Smokers will selfishly use their funds to buy cigarettes before any other person's welfare. Smokers are addicts who will feed their addiction before anything else.

Tax the effing things out of existence!

PS if it does lead to tobacco smuggling, then send in the army to shoot the smugglers.

Easy-peasy.

Hold on!!! Weren't we just told tax on tobacco and alcohol would be slashed? 😳

Or will they claim next month that there will be a spectacular 8 baht cut, meaning that nothing really changed? 🥴

If you want to stop people smoking....make vaping legal. Oh...that's right. You can't tax vaping in the same way as cigarettes. Yes...yes...it's all about revenue....sorry

That'll be fun @gummy.

Already 38° and then trousers and jacket with extra pockets to carry your vaccination passport, driving license, wallet, camera, phone, power pack, keys etc

And of course your passport to buy cigarettes at a discount 🤭

Then in a bar you show your vaccination status to get in and hand over your passport inside at the bar for a discounted drink 🤭

I bet they can't wait for the fun to start 🥴

Yes, and while they're at it do the same for alcohol and price it out of existence as well. It's detrimental impact on society is much greater

"“The TOAT is concerned about the illegal cigarette trade which it expects to increase substantially because of the tax rate hike.”

they should be, because will be a lot smuggling coming of cigarettes, at least they have something to do

That was cigars and imported alcohol.

Locals don't smoke cigars, according to the government.  They want to entice the rich to visit.
